John Russell's learned analysis of this unique 19th century painter who despite a tragically short life 'created something new,a kind of painting that was my own' as Georges later commented.A readable artistic biography with an extensive chapter on his major work 'Grand Jatte',the painting that confirmed Seurat's deserved reputation as an innovator of artistic endeavour. With over 225 illustrations a valuable addition to the history of art.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful By Mr. J. R. Rogers on 6 Aug. 2011
Format: Hardcover
Roger Fry's appraisal of Seurat remains well referenced and his essay in this volume will be of interest to scholars and art lovers, especially those new to Seurat. It is enhanced by a 1965 essay from Anthony Blunt - stripped of his knighthood in 1979 when revealed as a former Soviet spy. Blunt's essay on Fry and his relations with Seurat serves as foreword. This concise book is an ideal introduction to Seurat - elegantly presented, and an essential reference for students.

Although the book is tiny, it still proves Seurat's genius. The book is in perfect condition and I am very glad I bought it.
