As you may know the new assassins creed is set in the American Revolution (The first chance in history for the devs to set the game in the 'good old USA' they of course take it).
Just to make this clear I doubt I will be able to enjoy a game that involved killing scores of British soldiers so I won't be getting this game. Basically I was wondering whether anyone else felt a bit uneasey about playing a game that will no-doubt cast the Brits as the baddies and of course the USA as the heroic underdogs who defeated the evil empire of british stereotypes?
1. as it states when you start it, it's a fictional game based on real events.
2. you don't know the story yet, it may be the other way around or have nothing/little to do with that. plus there's assassins and templars in more than one country...
3. in ac 1 you killed.. cant remember but whatever; in ac 2 you killed italians and in brotherhood italians and frenchs, not to mention that you could send assassins in missions to other country's so (no ofense but) your argument about killing a certain type of culture/nationality (im excluding revelations coz havent played it yet) is a bit stupid
I was just wondering whether anyone else felt the same way about slicing up people who represent persons of thier own nationality as I do. Whether its Italians, French, American, whatever..
I only played AC1 and AC2, toward the end of AC2 it got a bit weird so I kind of lost the appetite.. It clearly came across that I wouldnt play this game only because of the British soldiers. Thats my bad
Looking forward to this game and the opportunity to massacre a slew of british soldiers in a bloodied frenzy of slashing, stabbing and general unpleasantness. Serves us right for having an empire and oppressing the Americans and I shall indiscriminately kill all who get in my way!
*Just been informed this is just a game and hitting a bunch of buttons to kill some pixels is in no way invoking revenge upon the Empire so for that reason I shall have to join Mott in avoiding this game ;) *
In every AC game I have endeavoured to not kill anyone but unfortunately the game 'kills' all the little pixel people (including the civilians) whenever I left an area so they could be reused in the next area. So I too will be avoiding this game as, after four games, the genocide of pixels has become too much for me.
They've already stated that there will be bad guys on both sides as templars have infiltrated both the English and the Americans, also in the first Assassin's Creed Altair killed hundreds of English, French and German Knights. Finally, not getting a GAME because it involves killing certain types of people is ridiculous, I'm English and proud of it but that won't stop me getting this game as I think it's important to look at both sides of the conflict (the colonists were heavily and unfairly taxed and at that time mostly considered themselves British until they felt they had to make a new state)
I understand were your coming from but the british were the bad guys in that point in history but I also agree they are employing a stereo type here but we need to accept that we brits will always be stereo typed about that point in history
Inspired by historical events and created by multiculural staff of various religious and politial beliefs. Intelligent people know that is just a game hence why Medal of Honour, Modern Welfare etc sell so well when it involves "killing" nationalities. For most of the 20th century Germans & Russians have been labelled as the "bad guys" in countless films and games and most of those have sold well because of sterotyping. After all, it's not real!!
None of the AC games have been a black and white bad guy scenario. Yeah, it's portrayed that the Templars are the bad guys, and Assassins the good, but it hasn't been brought down to the level of 'nationality'- or race, religion or creed. It has already been announced that the Templars will be both American and British, and the protagonist is half-English, half Native American so it won't be solely Britain being portrayed as the 'baddies'.
I get where you're comign from. I'm really concerned too, especially with the concept art of him being best pals with the leader of the rebels. I want AC to be fair to both sides but does it really seem fair when in every bit of art I've seen so far he's butchering Britons. I really respect AC thus far as it's been fair to both sides of almost every engagement but before now they've never put the protagonist clearly slaughtering a person from one side with the flag of the opposing side behind him.
I'm fine with a two-sided game, just not a one-sided "let's kill Britons" bloodfest which it's on track from what I see thus far as being.
Its a game. Does it really matter who the bad guys are come on get a life.. My god you played AC1 which had english knights in it. (HELLO Templars) Also maybe you should play it as it portrays the templars as evil when in fact they were a force of good with the highest honoyr and chivaly. They became very rich to the point that a fench king and the pope had them all assassinated on friday the 13th. Thats why its classed as an unlucky day. So who was evil and bad then?
I wish people would stop saying you killed certain nationalites in the previous games. The fact is you didn't really, in AC1 you killed crusaders (mixture of french, english, spanish, german, italian and pretty much every other nationality in christendom) in AC2 you killed italian factions (note at this point that Italy as a nation didn't exist). AC3 is the first game where you will be butchering members of an established nation, not a coalition force of different nationalites.
The problem I have also comes from the fact that the American War of Independance is pretty much always handled badly as a subject for media. The Patriot for example is widely regarded as one of the most historically inaccurate piles of rubbish (bordering on racist) films ever made. The war is never portrayed accurately and thats why people come out with all kinds of rubbish. If anyone was the underdog it was Britain, facing the combined threat of the Colonists, French, Spanish and Dutch. But of course there will be little to no mention of the other nations involvement because there never is. The common myth for the war starting because of heavy taxation is false also, the colonists were taxed less than the people living in England. The colonists basically weren't happy because the British taxed them the cost it took to protect them.
So when all these speeches go on about liberty and freedom from tyranny its a load of rubbish, the colonists were the greedy ones, they were amongst the least taxed of all the empire. My only hope is that the subject matter is handled properly for a change. I don't mind killing British and colonists alike if its portrayed accurately.
The idea is that Assassins Creed was not an established game so it was indifferent what happened in it, this is a game that could have been set anywhere but has skipped large sections of history to a point where we are now going to be playing an assassin with the needs to rid his land of a nations army that guarantees that many will need to be killed in the game. The other reasoning is that in this, the British are the bad guys, the story of them massacring a village and then the assassin taking revenge did not need to be there. Then there is the fact that these are soldiers from 230 years ago, compared to religious knights every now and then in the original. The soldiers are ,as anyone aware of the history will know, are fighting because the colonials won't pay the tax, lower tax than the residents of Britain were paying, required to fight a war with France, Spain, Dutch, Indian battles. Greed? Then there is the fact that the cover of the game shows a Red Coat being killed which clearly suggest the enemy in the game, not forgetting that many of the soldiers fighting for Britain in this war were German mercanaries as British soldiers were in several wars around the world, but this is unlikely to be included in the game. This will lead to neo-patriotism from americans as usual, again linking to the fact that the colonials were British.
I just think that games are always too pro-america and developers just tend to default to one of the well known America Vs Foreigners point in history, USA Good/Anyone else Bad. I saw the cover art for this and thought wow they've kind of just killed the series for me, same old rubbish Team America propaganda. I think that the first chance the devs got to take the game to the good old USA they took it. A lot of games nowadays just seem like pro-american propaganda, i think that we need some more European companies making games, Europeans tend to have a more mature national self opinion and arent afraid to critisise themselves or thier own nation.
you make a good point but remember Ubisoft is primarily a canadian games company, and they considered fuedal japan as a setting before realising that they had more historical events recorded accurately in the american revolution, also seeing as americans are going to be the cheif consumers of this game and there are very few games set in this period of history, i think they made the right decision :)
The latest trailer very much annoyed me, i'm fine with the time period and the fact the british are the oppressors, but i was under the impression Connor would be going against both sides, though perhaps not equally. The latest trailer had him ONLY kill brits, not one other nationality. It does send off a poor bias picture
however mott you know apart from the political undertones that we seem to get caught up in, we must understand that it is a game! have you played assassins creed revelations set in Arabia? should we say that game is racist because it depicts the assassination and slaughter of people in Istanbul? if you pay attention to the statements before every ac game it says it has been developed by a multi cultural development team that means a lot of individuals from different countries have been involved and im sure same as always british people will be involved in the creation of ac 3 so relax and slaughter sum english fodder cant wait to use the tomahawk :D
