5.0 out of 5 stars Another suspense-filled mystery, 6 Sep 2006
By ctdak (Alaska USA) - See all my reviews
Just one more of many suspense-filled mysteries from a master story teller. This is not one of the author's latest novels, but I felt compelled to comment on it nonetheless, and here's why ... When I first discovered Robert Goddard I was warned by a bookstore clerk that even Goddard fans didn't like Set In Stone, although she didn't exactly say why. Thus I saved it until last, reading all of his others first, only to find that this one is one of his best!

It seems that some dislike the "supernatural" element of this story, or consider it out of character for this author. The latter may be true as he hasn't written another one quite like it, but as to the former all I can say is that this is fiction after all. (Why is there always such a hue and cry for fiction to be realistic throughout!) I found the "haunted house" aspect of the story reminded me in some ways of a Hitchcock story, and in no way did it detract from the story as a whole.

Perhaps more than Goddard's other stories, this one and "Caught in the Light" make the reader want to get involved as one of the characters, in order to help straighten things out due to people being misrepresented and misunderstood! Only a good author can do that.

Neither did I find there to be any significant loose ends at story's end as some have suggested. The story got wrapped up rather nicely I thought. So, especially if you already like Goddard's writing style (a master of twists and turns), then don't delay to read this one like I did. It's really very good, if not always realistic!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure about this one!, 1 Feb 2002
By johnverp (Budapest) - See all my reviews
I have read nearly all of Goddard's books and have one unread one on my shelf. I waited with this particular one for longer than usual because I had seen references to the supernatural in some of the Amazon reviews - this didn't excite!

Many of Goddard's usual ingredients are there - exceptional and rich writing, good characterisation and, above all, his exploitation of the fact that people lie - this to create a good plot with twists and turns.

As it turned out, I wasn't too intimidated by the supernatural - in the end, its role wasn't all that influential (I think!). I also didn't mind the espionage angle.

Where I felt let down, however, was the close in that I felt too much remain unresolved and this is not usual for Goddard..

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to previous standards, I agree, 10 Aug 2005
The first Goddard book I read was "Into the Light" which I found absolutely stunning. I've read a few more and enjoyed them all, but none as good as ItL I think.
And, Set in Stone, while quite an interesting book, was disappointing, both in characterisation and in plot, definitely only 3 stars (max.)
And, why, in my edition, does it say on the flyleaf (c) Robert & Vaunda Goddard, then Catherine Cookson asserts her moral right to be recognised as the author....
Have I missed something?
