Product Description

Someone is trying to kill Lila Hilliard. During the Christmas holidays she returns from running errands to find her family home in flames, her father and brother trapped inside. Later, she is attacked by a mysterious man on a motorcycle. . . and the threats don’t end there.

As Lila desperately tries to piece together who is after her and why, she uncovers information about her father’s past in Chicago during the volatile days of the late 1960s . . . information he never shared with her, but now threatens to destroy her.

Part thriller, part historical novel, and part love story, Set the Night on Fire paints an unforgettable portrait of Chicago during a turbulent time: the riots at the Democratic Convention . . . the struggle for power between the Black Panthers and SDS . . . and a group of young idealists who tried to change the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly recommended read 23 Mar 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
'Set The Night On Fire' tells the story of Dar Gantner a 1960s radical now released from a forty year prison sentence for bombing a department store in which three people died. Someone with something to hide is killing the people Dar was close to back then and threatening their descendents. The key to the mystery lies back in the events in Chicago all those years ago that led to the department store bombing.

Libby Fischer Hellmann crafts a believable recreation of 'sixties Chicago, of the radical hopes and challenges and the self-deceptions that marked the time and this is the real strength of the book. You see in a character like Billy, an orphan adopted by the group, a symbol of the characteristic American dilemma of innocence betrayed.

But overall, this is not a 'heavy' book. It's a thriller informed with real substance and a highly recommended read.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable mystery 17 Feb 2013

I almost gave this book up very early, but am grateful that I persevered. I initially felt that it was slow and confusing, but now appreciate it was all part of a good build-up.

Lila and her family are targets for reasons she doesn't understand and she loses two family members pretty quickly. Eventually, she connects events to the involvement of her parents in the protest movements of the late sixties. The first and last third of the book are current day, while the middle third takes us back to what her parents were up to in the earlier period. Delivery is in the third person throughout.

This is a well-written and engaging novel which does well in maintaining interest and intrigue levels throughout.

I have read a short story by Hellmann, which I didn't enjoy, so took a gamble in ordering this novel. I must say I was pretty impressed. 9/10

5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read. 21 Jun 2011

This book starts off with a real bang and carries the reader along. It transports us back to the sixties with a great mystery and wonderful characterisation.

The incredible descriptions had me thinking I was actually involved in the story.

An absolute must read thriller.
