I have read nearly all of Goddard's books and have one unread one on my shelf. I waited with this particular one for longer than usual because I had seen references to the supernatural in some of the Amazon reviews - this didn't excite!

Many of Goddard's usual ingredients are there - exceptional and rich writing, good characterisation and, above all, his exploitation of the fact that people lie - this to create a good plot with twists and turns.

As it turned out, I wasn't too intimidated by the supernatural - in the end, its role wasn't all that influential (I think!). I also didn't mind the espionage angle.

Where I felt let down, however, was the close in that I felt too much remain unresolved and this is not usual for Goddard..

Tony Sheridan is suffering from the recent death of his wife Marina who fell for no apparent reason from Henna Cliff in Devon. After this tragic even, Tony decides to leave Stanacombe and to live with Marina's sister Lucy and her husband Matt Prior. They possess a grandiose and remote mansion called Otherways which was the only house built by a strange Edwardian architect.
Soon Tony, still plagued by the memories of Marina, is strongly attracted to Lucy and at the same time discovers a letter which states that Otherways was the setting of the mysterious murder committed in 1939 known as "the Milner enigma".
Lucy and Tony become lovers, Tony thus betraying his friend Matt and Lucy wrecking her marriage. And as Tony tries to uncover the mystery behind Otherways, the list of victims grows longer and longer and disaster can no longer be avoided.
The plot in "Set In Stone" turns and twists and Robert Goddard is truly a master story writer in the suspense genre.

The first Goddard book I read was "Into the Light" which I found absolutely stunning. I've read a few more and enjoyed them all, but none as good as ItL I think.
And, Set in Stone, while quite an interesting book, was disappointing, both in characterisation and in plot, definitely only 3 stars (max.)
And, why, in my edition, does it say on the flyleaf (c) Robert & Vaunda Goddard, then Catherine Cookson asserts her moral right to be recognised as the author....
Have I missed something?
