Product Description

According to modern geology, our world is over four and a half billion years old, and its geological features have been sculpted over vast eons of time.

Everyone knows that planet earth is unimaginably ancient. It s common knowledge that geological forces have acted slowly over millions of years to form the rocks beneath our feet. But what if what everyone "knows is wrong"?

This remarkable programme takes the viewer on a visual odyssey of discovery like no other. Shot on location across Britain, it takes in some of the most spectacular countryside, beautiful coastlines and awe inspiring landscapes these islands have to offer. From the stormy shores of South Wales to the dramatic Giant s Causeway in County Antrim, from the granite tors of Dartmoor to the windswept uplands of the Peak District, we visit an array of sites that have inspired generations of geologists and helped us to unravel the mysteries of the earth s past. Most significantly, we pay a visit to Siccar Point in Scotland, made famous by the pioneering naturalist James Hutton, whose observations here sparked an earthquake in the science of geology that still reverberates to this day.Along the way, we will pose some intriguing questions. Were the rocks around us formed slowly and gradually or suddenly during catastrophic events?

Did the history of the world unfold over vast eras of time or much shorter periods? And what do the rocks really tell us about the geological history of our world?

Complete with an educational booklet supported by over 150 references to the scientific literature.

From Biblical Creation Ministries researcher Paul Garner and producer Mark Haville comes 'Set In Stone'. According to modern geology, our world is over four and a half billion years old, and its geological features have been sculpted over vast eons of time. 1.0 out of 5 stars A House Built on Sand? 27 Feb 2012
Format:DVD
"Were the rocks around us formed slowly and gradually - or suddenly during catastrophic events?" This question, the second of the presentation, is a false dichotomy as the rocks around us result from both gradual and catastrophic processes. It sets the scene for Set in Stone's continual compounding of this error. Going on, as it does, to suggest that belief in catastrophic processes has become "fashionable even mainstream". It isn't 'even mainstream' it is the mainstream, but it's a mainstream where gradualistic and catastrophic processes are considered in unison to produce a coherent whole. This is a rather large elephant in the room that the presenters ignore for the entire presentation. The mention of the late Professor Ager and his Thursday afternoon Sutton Stone fails to include the fact that he fully accepted the modern synthesis of both gradual and catastrophic processes and that he rejected utterly the use of his 'new catastrophism' in support the kind of extreme catastrophism manifesto presented by Set in Stone. A production that fails to include any mainstream scholars of geology and whose presenters to a man are Young Earth Creationists.

On a technical level Set in Stone is full of errors by omission. When talking about the rapid deposition of mudstones through the flocculation, clumping, of clay particles it fails to mention that this process leaves a visible signature in the rock that can be seen by geologists. Needless to say this signature is not universally present in all mudstones. Nor indeed that as mudstones form they contain large amounts of water, which with increasing pressure gets squeezed out resulting in them loosing as much as 90% of their original volume.

1.0 out of 5 stars Deceit in stone 14 April 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Creationists are often accused of lying. On viewing this DVD it is easy to see why. There is more than one way to lie. There is the straightforward fib. A false statement made with the intention to deceive. More subtle, and often more effective because it can be harder to detect, is the lie of omission - a fact which undermines the speakers' argument, so it is withheld from the audience. Whilst "Set in Stone" contains only a few items that might be taken as straightforward fibs, it could be accused of majoring in the lie of omission. What its presenters do not tell their audience is far more revealing than what they do.
To understand what is going on with this film one must first take a look at its presenters. All three are prominent young earth creationists, and the publishers, "Truth in Science", are a well-known creationist organisation with a history of producing misleading material promoting their fundamentalist, Biblical beliefs. (See [...] to find out just how inappropriately named this organisation is).
Most prominent amongst the presenters is Dr Andrew Snelling, who has written copiously on his belief that the earth and universe are 6,000 years old, and that Noah's flood, about 4,500 years ago, laid down all the geological strata from some point in the Precambrian onwards, and did so within the space of a single year.
These beliefs are kept hidden from the audience - a telling omission.

Format:DVD
The DVD helpfully comes with a full (referenced) transcript - which can be linked to here: [...]l. It seeks to portray a stark 'either or' battle within geology between uniformitarian 'dogma' and overlooked catastrophism in understanding Earth's history - clearly, if they can convince viewers that short-lived catastrophic events explain the UK's geology they can make a case that Earth is much younger than generally believed. The Bible, specifically Genesis, is mentioned but the viewer is NOT told that the makers and presenters (Paul Garner, John Whitmore, Andrew Snelling) all think - by faith - that the planet is just 6,000 years' old. The film does seek to cram in rather a lot of information - both real science and what I suspect is pseudo-science. It is scenic, and the accompanying music is quite stirring. The viewer is invited near the end of the film to contact info@truthinscience.org.uk afterwards - though the materials don't elaborate on the aims of Truth in Science.

After seeing the horizontal over vertical layers at Siccar Point, and hearing about Hutton and Lyell, we are told by the narrator "catastrophism ... was considered out of bounds". But then "many rock layers pointed to processes more rapid and violent than those going on at the present day". (Ah yes, we don't get tsunamis and explosive eruptions of Mount St Helens these days.) And "within the last 40 years, belief in large-scale geological catastrophies, one regarded as heresy, has become fashionable again - even mainstream".

Derek Ager's work on catastrophism is referenced, and his views on the Sutton Stone (near Swansea) - which we are told contains pebbles "'floating' within a mass of finer sediment" - are mentioned.
