Product Description

Album Description

Live, intimate, and raw, Sessions for Robert J is the essential audio/video companion to Eric Clapton's Me and Mr Johnson, a tribute to blues legend Robert Johnson. Filmed during tour rehearsals in London and Dallas plus a Los Angeles hotel room and the Dallas warehouse where Johnson made some of his final recordings, Sessions for Robert J finds Clapton performing all Robert Johnson songs with his touring band, acoustically with Doyle Bramhall II and solo-as well as discussing Johnson and his influence. A performance/documentary DVD with 14 tracks (from which the 11 CD selections are taken), Sessions for Robert J is blues heaven.

...well you don't. As a big Robert Johnson fan I was quite worried about this album. Robert Johnson is widely accepted as the biggest influence to the music (Delta Blues) that evolved into Chicago Blues then into Rock&Roll very quickly to become common-place in today's society. Do a search if you doubt me. If you still doubt it then don't take my word for it, take Eric Clapton's. What you need to realise is that, on this album, Eric Clapton did not try to create better versions of R.J songs. He is simply tipping his hat to his biggest influence and casually recording his own interpretation of R.J songs...and what an interpretation! This is a fantastic C.D/D.V.D combo and should really be priced at around £35.00. The C.D is good but the D.V.D is better. It's a perfect balance between electric wizardry and acoustic genius. His supporting musicians, as you would expect, are also in fantastic form for these recordings, in particular his supporting guitarist, Doyle (lookout for the acoustic duet, session III). I also have the Eric Clapton MTV Unplugged D.V.D and the C.D, which we all know are fantastic, but this is far better. It makes you feel part of the sessions and gives a bit of insight into Eric's world through the interviews...a must for every aspiring guitarist and for those R.J fans who have tried to play his songs. I was rather baffled though, because they appear to have missed out the D.V.D bonus tracks (as stated on the back) on the actual D.V.D, but there is loads of good quality material on both C.D & D.V.D you wont even care. I think somewhere (with or without his soul) a certain Mr Robert Johnson is very very pleased indeed. Well done Mr Clapton!!

This blues rock album is Clapton back at his best. It's raw 12 bar as it should be played and sung, right back to his Bluesbreakers roots. Eric has had a long and glittering career, and long may it continue, but, in my opinion, he has lost his way on occasions, for what reasons I cannot guess. He's a blues man and loves it, but sweet, sickly, glossy magazine style blues that appears on albums like August and Pilgrim should have no place in his repertoire. On those, he might just as well have been Phil Collins, who, I believe, featured on one of them. With 'Sessions' he is just Clapton and it's a treat for blues-starved ears.

There is not one bad track here - one great one follows another. I could go on, and on, and on, but, as I am plugged into it now on my MP3, I really must close my eyes and just listen and enjoy. Get it, play it, then play it repeatedly and tell me I'm right.

A must listen 3 Feb 2006
Format:Audio CD
Eric gets a lot of bad reviews these days and complaints about his white boy blues and although the Armani suits seemed to have disappeared people still say that he can’t sing the blues and drive a Ferrari. Well in the DVD part of this package he actually drives a Porsche so there you go. For those that think you have to suffer to be able to play/sing the blues, I would say to them go read about his life.

Well I don’t know if this CD/DVD combo is the blues but it certainly is one of the best music DVD’s I have heard and enjoyed. It is rarely too far away from my player and in DTS it sounds great. The band sessions are great but the two acoustic sessions are two of my favourite listening pleasures. I am no expert but I know what I like and I like this.

I have a great deal of Eric’s back catalogue and some is a bit too easy listening for my taste but this stuff, although maybe not having the intensity of his early music (Bluesbreakers, Cream etc.), is some of the best he has done in years.

If you are a fan buy this, especially at its current price a real bargin, and while you are at it buy the Cream reunion gig on DVD. Clapton at his best for many years and proves he still has it.
