5.0 out of 5 stars Education And Fun Comes Together 24 Oct 2011
By JP
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I see I'm the first to review this game. Actually I would prefer not giving my opinion here as I am an adult and do not have any kids. So why did I get this game then, seeing that I am totally not the market the game was intended for? And that was my original plan, to sit this one out until I had read a few reviews on the game and got curious, and then there's the fact that I'm kind of a big Kinect fan and really want to give this gadget my full support. Last year when it came out my hopes and dreams were quickly brought down to a more realistic level with a series of way below average games, only to be picked up again in the last few months by games like The Gunstringer, Child of Eden, Dance Central 2, and now also Once Upon a Monster.

Once Upon a Monster is truly where the world of education and fun (gaming) comes together, and making it interactive. The game is similar to scripts from the TV show and features Elmo (the red one) reading a book with his friends entitled, well, Once Upon a Monster. From chapter to chapter you go with Elmo and his friends as the story unfolds, and each of these chapters filled with interesting quests and activities.

The activities are basic and evolves round dancing, avoiding obstacles, jumping, saying words, singing, etc. Things you'd expect a kid to do at primary/elementary level. Though the market is clearly the young ones, I have to admit I've had a blast. It's definitely not every adult's cup of tea, but if you are interested in something very casual, laid-back and a no-brainer then give it a try. Otherwise, it's for the kids, and I'll advise the grownups to stick around to help when the instructions aren't always that clear.

For me the controls/tracking did feel a little out of tune at times, but in view of the game genre it did not distract or bother at all. There is also no one shouting at you if you do something wrong and good work is awarded with stars (just like school). Chapters can be played again and again.

Again, I hate when people tell me "you must buy this" because it's all opinion without any objective substance, but in this case it is a must if you've got a Kinect at home and you've got young ones hanging around. I know that Sesame Street has signed some kind of deal with Microsoft Xbox to bring more of this kind of programming to Kinect in the future, and that will be a really great idea as a few games like these will be perfect for the library. I wonder if we'll see the Muppets next, or even...Teletubbies?

5.0 out of 5 stars Dance and play with Elmo and Cookie! 29 Nov 2011
By AmK
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This is the first game that I bought to play with our new Kinect. I thought it would be a good idea to choose a game that my children would enjoy. I had no idea that I would enjoy it too. The game is laid out in chapters and you can replay the first chapters anytime that you like. You open your arms to open the book and pass your arm in front from left to right depending on if you want to go forward in the book and back. My seven year old loved in and for the first time in a xbox game, my 9 year old autistic son was able to play and had a BRILLIANT TIME! It needs you to do games like dancing and Simon's Says but it's not overly crazy with how exactly you need to do the things. If you aren't getting the move it will give you a few attempts and then just move on which is really incredibly helpful when you have a child with a high frustration level.

The replay value is also really high. There are so many different games to do in each chapter that you can replay it and have fun without too much repetition. My boys and I have had hours of fun with it with hours of fun still left. I didn't find anything that I found to be a problem at all. The game recognizes commands easily, has fun music, the voices are the ones that you would expect. If I was overly critical, I would say that the dressing up games where you have to choose outfits for the monsters go on a bit long. I think that this is a great value game, good play, excellent graphics and ok music. I would highly recommend it especially as a first kinect game for kiddos that haven't tried kinect before :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost a 5 star 5 Jan 2012
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Sesame Street: Once Upon a Monster

This game has had generally good reviews and rightly so, it's a very light hearted fun way to spend time with a young child. It's very well presented and colourful. The voice work is excellent and sometimes funny, my son loves Cookie Monster so that helps. It's very easy to use, my son could do it himself after I worked it out and showed him the basics and he finished his first play through last night.

2 players can sometimes make it more difficult for the child, and sometimes more easy, depends on the game type at the time.

The variation in games could be better, some of them are really good fun. Others a little simple and repetitive, unfortunately there are too many of the repetitive little dancing ones for me, I don't think they are hard, or challenging in any way, and in fact they are a little tedious, but overall the package is good, but warning - this is for younger children I think any child 5-6 above would not enjoy this.

I thought honestly also that there'd be more spelling or letters as this is what Sesame street is famous for, and also why I think its aimed more at 3-4.

It takes a few hours to play through the game once, but each chapter can be played as many times as you like whether you are after stars or not.

There a few issues with the game I don't like. The main gripe is the DLC and the way it is presented.
Flip past the last chapter you have done and there is the DLC looking all sparkly and all you have to do is open the tabs the same as you do for any other chapter and you are in a payment screen. Too easy for youngsters and also confusing for them. I have not purchased this yet and probably will in time, but in my own time. I feel it's done in a way to encourage the kid to moan at mum and dad to buy it?

So aside from the DLC and the little repetitive dancing sections, it's a really good game and worth it for any pre schooler.
