Review

"Move over Fifty Shades of Grey. This collection, edited by erotica veteran Rachel Kramer Bussel, will bring out your inner submissive without having to sift through the banal thoughts of Anastasia Steele." --Refinery 29 "You won't find any stereotypical submission stories in here. Each of the 22 entries is well thought out, beautifully realized and sexy as hell. From the BDSM novice to the seasoned practitioner, there truly is something for everyone and I couldn't recommend this book more! If sexy stories of female submission tickle your fancy, grab this book -- you won't be sorry!" --Secret Pleasures "A highly erotic collection of 22 stories of female submission, Serving Him is edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel and features a host of top class authors in the femsub genre. Forget 50 Shades of crap - this is so much better!" --Skin Two Magazine "If you liked 50 Shades of Grey, then you'll fall in lust with Rachel Kramer Bussel's even hotter BDSM books, like Serving Him and Please, Sir. Although she writes about female submissives, her protagonists legitimately crave and take pleasure in the sex they're having. What's hotter than that?" --Cosmopolitan "If you're at all interested in stories where the man dominates and the woman submits, you should get your hands on a copy of this anthology. I promise it won't disappoint!" --Thoughts of a Growing Sub "I highly recommend this collection of stories." --Lina Sacher "Serving Him contains 22 stories that feature a variety of kinks and desires that will be sure to satisfy anyone's lustful hunger." --Bitches n Prose "These books are always my escape from my real life into a fantastical one." --Tracey G "Once in a blue moon I'm able to carve out some time and nibble away at a book that catches my fancy. Serving Him: Sexy Stories of Submission, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel and published by Cleis Press, is one of those books." --Lucy Malone "What I really loved about Serving Him is that it allowed my mind to wander through the corridors of other people's dungeons and kinky lifestyles whilst going no further than my comfy reading chair. I mean what's not to love about that?" --Clitical "Finally some smart, sexy and authentic stories about submission. As a service and sexual submissive I found these stories to not only be erotic but thought provoking." --Kinky Cup of Tea "Women intrigued by the dominant/submissive dynamic -- think the movie Secretary or Ana and Christian's iron-clad contract in Fifty Shades -- this collection of short BDSM erotica stories will take your curiosity to the next level." --Lifestyle Mirror "This collection of short stories covers the full range of the male dom's brand of sensuality, from spanking and bondage to public sex and power exchange. The pages are filled with bossy hunks and obedient ladies." --Adult Video News "Bestselling eroticist Rachel Kramer Bussel and her coterie of contributors cover the full give and take of sensual sadism, from spanking and bondage to public sex and pushing boundaries everywhere from the bedroom to the boardroom." --Daily Loaf As true tops, the bossy hunks in these stories understand that erotic BDSM is about exulting in power that is freely yielded. Rachel and her coterie of contributors cover the full range of the male dom's brand of sensual sadism, from spanking and bondage to public sex and power exchange. --Erotica Readers and Writers Association "Stories of bondage, pain, roleplay, and more than a few good, hard spankings are littered throughout, with an overarching (and very queer) theme of the inherent power in submission." -- Sex Life Canada "The type of book that makes the reader say, 'I could see doing that!'" --Airen Wolf "If you are looking for sexy, real, and action packed short stores; this book is a must have." --Kink Etc. "Serving Him is one of the best Bussel-edited anthologies I've read." --Steve Isaak "The stories here cover the full range of sensuality connected to male dominance--spanking and bondage, public and private sex and power exchange. Gaining power only happens when it is yielded. The stories are kinky, fun and erotic. Many of these stories are quite intense and border between joy and fear--two very strong emotions. There are dungeon scenes and regular bedroom scenes--everything depends on the participants and the pleasure they gain. Everything to make a sexual experience more pleasurable is here--from toys to handcuffs. It is all about pleasure and enjoyment--the same feelings you will get from reading these stories." --Amos Lassen "The strength of this book lies in its diversity. The authors explore a broad spectrum of the erotic dance between the strong, seductive dominant male and the strong woman who thrives and blooms when she submits. The dance takes many forms in the twenty-two stories that the editor has carefully chosen for us. As a reader, you can tell this book was put together with care given the selection of well written stories with a variety of plots and kinks. There is something for every reader of erotica who enjoys D/s and BDSM as well as those who just enjoy very sexy tales. The excitement and intensity of the tales go from subtle and delicate to direct and strong, even a bit rough at times. I will add that if you have a significant other, whether dominant, submissive, curious, or in between, then this is a book you can share. Who knows? You may learn a new trick or two or find a little inspiration. Or you may just live vicariously as a voyeur through the adventures and trysts of the characters. You will find well planned scenes and quicker interactions. There will be spanking, ropes, bondage, showers and all forms of delicious games in this collection." --The Itinerant Librarian "What I love most about a well-constructed "sexy story" anthology is that there's theoretically something for everyone between the covers. No two stories should bare too much (if any) similarity, and the topics, characters, and events should push a plethora of boundaries. This little number, edited by Rachel Kramer Bussel (a Cleis Press favorite), does measure up in these regards." -Lustful Literate

To be honest, I generally don't do well with short stories - to me, it is extremely difficult to get into them so quickly. Thus this collection of short stories was a huge surprise for me - I love them all, some more (e.g. Chattel and The Letter) some less, but at the end of the day I enjoyed them and didn't grow tired even when reading four or five in a row. This is an anthology of twenty-three short stories of safe, sane, consensual and sizzling submission. These couples are happy and content - they vary from BDSM novices to experienced TPE players, from age-play to traditional pain-pleasure kinks. The scenes are very different from one another but all have something exciting about them, it is really a worthy read!

On a side note: I just checked the price of the anthology here on Amazon and I think that this will put people off because it's (for English Kindle books) comparably high. Without meaning any offence I do think the publisher should re-consider the prizing.

Excellent BDSM anthology 10 April 2013
By Reviewer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Overall review:

"Serving Him" is one of the best Bussel-edited anthologies I've read. All but one of the stories are good, and even that singular piece - Gray Miller's "Bared" - wasn't a waste of time: I didn't like "Bared" because it's not a story, but, rather, a mood-intensive scene. That said, a few lines of characterization and backstory might have turned "Bared" into an amazing, fully realized tale.

Worth owning, this.

Standout stories:

1.) "Coffee Break" - Kristina Wright: A sub engages in unexpected pleasure in a café. Semi-public lust, trust and other sexual elements get their due in this excellent work.

2.) "Chattel" - Errica Liekos: Above-average tale about a woman (Sasha) whose frustration with her socially distant husband becomes a source of further connection with him. Smart read.

3.) "Under Direction" - Teresa Noelle Roberts: A sub and a Dom switch roles. Solid entry, borders on edutainment.

4.) "The Letter" - Tiffany Reisz: Good read about a shy woman with "different" tastes.

5.) "Run, Baby, Run" - Vida Bailey: A woman (Lana) and her husband (Jay) engage in a run-'n'-play sex. Imaginative piece with a strong emotional core.

6.) "Safe, Sane and Consensual" - Ariel Graham: Excellent story about a sub wife, her Dom husband and her overbearing parents. One of the best entries in this collection.

7.) "Breath" - Mollena Williams: Sensory-vivid breath-play piece.

8.) "In His Control" - Jade Melisande: A sub (Juli) rediscovers her sense of self via a lover (Ian) and a pivotal choice.

9.) "Subbing" - Rachel Kramer Bussel: A subbing gig leads to something more meaningful for a young woman (Taylor).

A Satisfying Selection of Submission 25 Aug. 2013
By Jill - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Serving Him: Sexy Stories of Submission is an erotica anthology in which each teasing little story features bottoms who are eager to serve and strong, male Doms who are happy to boss. Serving Him contains 22 stories that feature a variety of kinks and desires that will be sure to satisfy anyone's lustful hunger.

Rachel Kramer Bussel has a great skill for piecing together stories in an anthology that are radically different and yet all stick to a central theme. It's no wonder that so many people gobble these anthologies up, myself included. Though all of the stories follow the same general theme, they never grow boring or redundant.

For me personally, three stories stood out more than the others:

Coffee Break by Kristina Wright tells the tale of a no-nonsense Dom who coaxes his sub into trusting his instruction and into being a bit naughty in the bathroom of a coffee shop. A steamy note, an unlocked door, and delicious writing? Yes please. A double shot of that.

I Always Do by Kiki Delovely is a story that circles around a baby girl style relationship and perfectly narrates the needs, pride, and satisfaction that comes from pleasing your partner in a relationship. I rarely find well written stories on this topic, so this one definitely popped for me.

Pinky by Kissa Starling follows a sub who rebelliously changes her hair color without permission from her Dom and must face the punishments. This particular story contains surprise menage, which was very steamy in its writing and had an overall warm tone throughout.

Of course, I did enjoy some stories more than others. In some instances, that fact was due to a personal issue with the view point of the writing. But mostly, it just happened that those stories that I didn't like involved a kink that I don't have. You can't win 'em all.

Plus, look at that cover. I know that's not how you should judge a book, but it's pretty hard not to in this case.

To any fan of male Doms, BDSM, kinks, and general naughtiness- this collection is bound to have at least one story that makes it worth the read. If sex or BDSM and the various topics surrounding them bother you, this isn't for you.

I received this book from the editor, Rachel Kramer Bussel, in exchange for an honest review.

Book's Almost Too Hot to Hold 2 Jun. 2013
By QuixoticOrchid - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
These stories don't contain a single one of those Prince Charmings you read and dreamed about as a little girl. The men in these pages are confident, skilled in power and restraint...bad boys that satisfy every fantasy you have and even a few you didn't know you were capable of and make you beg for more. You don't read this book, you feel this book.

A Master's view of "Serving Him" 25 Aug. 2013
By Wayne Anderson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
NOTE: A free review copy was supplied to this reviewer. Thanks, Rachel!

SERVING HIM is a collection of 22 short stories of female submission. Individually, the stories are hot, sexy, erotic, downright pornographic -- what words do you want to use?

Collectively, these stories comprise a book that is stimulating to mind and body, and the two primary emotions that resonate are lust and joy.

The writers are a different generation from the women who used to write delicately phrased bodice rippers. These women aren't afraid of to get down and dirty, with words or deeds. The clitoris is their best friend -- or would be, perhaps, except for one thing.

These stories are all about female submission. The best friend in these is the man who understands them, who controls them and dominates and uses them, which is exactly what they long for. The women aren't doormats; they're smart, sexy, and make their own decisions -- right up to the moment when they decide to submit.

Some are subs, with Doms. Some are slaves, with their Masters. All of the stories are well written, and the writers all seem to know their subject far better than 98% of the low-grade hacks trying to cash in on coattails of the execrable "Fifty Shades".

The great SF writer Theodore Sturgeon once famously said, "Ninety percent of science fiction is crap. But then, ninety percent of EVERYTHING is crap!" This is more than true of BDSM fiction -- since the inexplicable success of "Fifty Shades," nearly everyone who ever fantasized about handcuffs has decided it's the ticket to wealth and fame. And with self-publication of E-books dropping the editorial gates from the process, most of that crap is drowning the marketplace.

Rachel Kramer Busseel is what this market needs. She is an editor with a good eye for quality writing, and this book demonstrates it. SERVING HIM isn't part of the ninety percent, or even of the nine percent above those. This is the thin top layer, the one percent. There's not a dud story in the bunch -- just good, steamy erotica.

A side note: While the usual market for these stories will be the submissive female, looking for some steamy erotic moments (and finding them here!), the stories can be plenty enjoyable for men as well. I'm a male Dom, a Master like those portrayed within the stories (well, maybe not as devastatingly handsome!), and I found plenty to like here.

Highly recommended!
