NIce book! 7 July 2008

Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lots of tips about basic ingredients needed to keep in your storecupboard in order to whip up something fast. Also advises where tinned or frozen or dried ingredients can be just as good as fresh.
My only problem is the Americanisms. I haven't heard of some of the ingredients, and, I mean, how much is a "cup full?" and what on earth is "half and half?"
I had no idea, so I did some research and here it is for anyone thinking of buying the book in the UK -
Half and Half is an American term meaning half cream and half milk.
But to be more specific it is based on the fat content, therefore depends on which fat content cream and milk you use. Half and half is around 12.5% fat so...UK single cream is around 18%, UK double cream is around 48%, UK whipping cream is around 38%, UK whole milk is around 4% and UK semi-skimmed milk is around 1.5-2%.
If you can find UK Lite single cream, it is around 12% - almost the same as 'half and half.'
Also for cup conversion...........

American spoon measures
1 level tablespoon flour = 15g flour
1 heaped tablespoon flour = 28g flour
1 level tablespoon sugar = 28g sugar
1 level tablespoon butter = 15g butter
American liquid measures
American liquid measures
1 cup U.S = 275ml
1 pint U.S = 550ml
1 quart U.S = 900ml
American solid measures
American solid measures
1 cup rice U.S = 225g rice
1 cup flour U.S = 115g flour
1 cup butter U.S = 225g butter
1 stick butter U.S = 115g butter
1 cup dried fruit U.S = 225g dried fruit
1 cup brown sugar U.S = 180g brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar U.S = 225g granulated sugar

There you go. Make a note of these and you should find the book useful.

Nothing worse than being single and being subjected to frozen meals and takeout fare. If that's your life, then this book will change your life.

I've found that most cookbooks serve six or more people. Reducing recipes by quantity alone poses a dilemma since proportions and cooking times can change when dividing recipes, and this book solves that dilemma.

Many of my single friends don't cook for themselves because they find shopping a drudgery. This book provides readers workable strategies such as stocking the pantry with basic ingredients so you can come home and whip up something quickly.

Try the chickpea and tuna salad recipe; it's delicious and takes only 10 minutes from start to finish. The pasta dishes are quick-cooking, and the book provides easy solutions when time is of the essence. She shows you how to make a simple and quick sauce from things on hand -- like olive oil, garlic and chopped fresh parsley -- and when the pasta is done, you've got a wonderful dinner.

Lydecker's book is practical as it includes recipes that reflect the way people eat when dining alone --including all-in-one meals, sandwiches, soups and pizzas.

I purchased this book because I am a single mom who's ex actually takes the kids and I frequently have to cook for one. I was tired of trying to figure out what to make. The cookbook has everything from soups and salads to desserts. Some of the recipes serve several and include freezing instructions for when you want a homemade frozen dinner. My absolute favorite recipe is called Fresh Tomato Sauce and I could have eaten it all summer made with homegrown tomatoes. The cookbook also includes minibiographies of single cooks, glossaries, and other interesting tips and information. Well worth the purchase price.
