Format: Paperback
For the user not so familiar with Sql Server 2005 or looking to switch from another database system, this book is a practical and hands-on way of grasping the fundamental Sql concepts. It's simple and direct style make it easy to understand. It is also loaded with images for the visual learner.

It comes with a generous supply of examples (in Visual Basic) which gives you the opportunity to get your hands dirty early on.
Finally, this book leaves no stone unturned, covering from installation, through to configuration, and the design and querying of simple databases.

Great Way to Get Started 28 Sep 2006
By John Matlock - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
An excellent introduction to Microsoft SQL Server for the beginner. It starts with the basic concepts of what a database is and how it is used. It covers installation of SQL Server 2005 exhaustivly. It then the best description I've seen on the management tools that come with the database.

Designing a database is not difficult, but this book has a couple of chapters on how a database design needs to reflect the business needs of the organization. In essense, here is some of the background that needs to be considered before the actual work of laying out the database is done. This area is often missed in those books that are so oriented to the teckie approach.

After these sections, which take up about one third of the book, the remainder of the book is on T-SQL. This is not an exhaustive coverage, but is very well suited for the person's first introduction to SQL. For instance, the SQL IF statement is mentioned only briefly. ==The CD provided with the book that includes sample files that are developed and used throughout the book.

Really basic 23 Feb 2007
By shawn yale - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
This book is oriented towards people with absolutely no prior SQL experience. The first 3 chapters are nothing more than how to install and configure Sql 2005 server. There is a decent background on database design. Overall, its just an ok book. You can learn what this book contains just by spending a little time on the web.

MS SQL Server 2005 Appplied Techniques 3 Sep 2009
By Ricardo Martinez - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is great for starters. The techniques the book has are all strictly by the book. I think this is one of the easiest books to understand especially in the security section. I have read other books about sql server maintenance and I did not quite understand what it was talking about when it came to security. Another good chapter about this book is the queering performance, it shows how to use the execution plan and that was a great help to me. Microsoft Press did a really good job on this book, like I said it is very easy to understand the concepts.

Mediocre overview of SQL 2005 1 Feb 2008
By J. P. Van Bosch - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
overview of all aspects but not as clear as could be, lot's of pre-knowledge about visual basic is assumed and not that clearly organized. There are a lot better books out there.

I would love to review this but have not yet received it from the States - I assume you are using Carrier Pigeon.
