The start of this book begins with the mummification of the High Priestess Irisi whilst she is still alive. As she undergoes the gruelling process, she reflects on her life and how she ended up in her current position.
As a skilled mercenary, Irisi is taken as a spoil of war when she survives a battle. Before she is sold into slavery, she thanks the commanding officer that protects her from abuse the only way she can whilst she has the choice of which man to take to her bed. Both she and General Khai never forget their one night together; and as each survive their coming ordeals, they finally meet again as equals. Yet an enemy conspires against Irisi and jeopardises any chance she may have of love. As this enemy dabbles in black magic and strives to raise a Djinn army, Irisi must accept her prophesised role to guard Egypt, even if it means giving her life.
"Servant of the Gods" is a fascinating, exciting novel with a formidable leading lady. The culture and rituals of ancient Egypt are beautifully and vividly described, whilst the blend of action and magic quickly captures and maintains your attention. My only small criticism; I was hoping that the story line would feature Irisi awakening in the present and using her ancient gifts to battle a modern enemy, but it does not. Instead this book is all about her back history; from a skilled mercenary to gladiatorial slave, and from a chosen of the Goddess Isis to a figure of prophecy. I note another book is available "Heart of the Gods", but I'm unsure if it continues with Irisi's story.
