First Sentence: I stared at the black-and-orange corsage on Barbara Thomas lapel so that I wouldn't have to look at anything else.

Sheriff Walt Longmire and his deputy encounter a bare-assed young man and the, supposedly, 200-year-old-man watching over him. In looking for the young man's mother, he finds himself tangling with a polygamous group buying up large areas of land in several states. But where are the wives and children? While they are stockpiling weapons, they are also buying things that are less expected. Walt, and his team, becomes involved in a case that starts simple but ends up much bigger and more dangerous than he expected.

Although I'm less cranky about prologues than I used to be, it is delightful when an author takes you straight into the story from page one. Not only does Mr. Johnson take you there, but he keeps you there until you've finished, having a complete disregard for your desire to sleep.

There is no question that Johnson's greatest strength is his characters. He balances their personalities off beautifully. Walt is well-read and has a strong belief in justice. Vic, his deputy and occasional lover, has all the sass and impatience of an East-Coast Italian. It's always nice to be reacquainted with the other recurring characters surrounding Walt, too. In this story young Cord and the older Orrin add both interest and humor and provide the bridge in the plot. Johnson develops the characters and brings them to life through excellent internal narrative and spoken dialogue. I did enjoy his nod to famous Wyoming defense attorney Gerry Spence

There is room for criticism with this book. There seemed to be an assumption that readers had read the previous books.

This is the second time I have read this great book by Craig Johnson. On second reading I find I am much more patient & take in the wonderful descriptions of the scenery. It is almost like watching it on a film as I read it. Yes I have watched the series Longmire on the TV & I do picture Walt, Henry & Vic as portrayed by Robert Taylor, Lou Diamond Phillips & Katee Sackhoff: but they are almost as I would have imagined them anyway. I love the developing relationship between Walt & Vic; this adds to the tension. As another reviewer says this books does end on a sad note but that just makes me want to read more- & I have read the next book in hard back! I enjoy the Indian mysticism that crops up in the books & despite all the death & destruction that occurs the main characters are people of integrity. Long may Craig Johnson write about these great characters in this wonderful background.

I gave it 4 stars instead of five because of the sad ending. I love Walter ans everyone else in Durant. The prose is nearly poetic in places with beautiful turns of phrase and landscape depictions. I like the old fashioned values used in the right way with nods toward more modern ways of thinking each used appropriatly. Well written, excellent characterization. Much better than the TV series.

Enjoyable and pacey- loved this book, I am very quickly working my way through the series and this is one of my favourites so far.
This instalment of Sheriff Walt Longmire starts slowly and rather sweetly with an Angels visit and builds to a heart-breaking crescendo. Walt is called to investigate the arrival of a Morman ‘Lost Boy’ during the investigating he is drawn into an interstate polygamy group, which has far reaching consequences for his team. Henry Standing Bear, Under Sheriff Vic Moretti, Ruby & Dog along with all the usual team members take part in the investigation and there are some interesting character developments as well as a shocking turn of events.
This has less of the Indian spiritual side than the last novel, and was better for it, but I did miss action taking place on the Res. To enjoy these books I do think that you have to leave a bit of reality behind, but they are hugely enjoyable.

A Serpent's Tooth is part of a series of books about a modern day sherrif called Walt Longmire. I started reading them because of the TV series and then found that I liked the books more. Each book tells a separate story in the life and work of Walt Longmire but there are references to previous story lines and it makes sense to read the books in sequence.
Walt is very much the hero of the stories but he is no super man but a real human with human failings. The author makes sure that you care deeply about what happens to him, his family, his work mates and his friends.
I find the depiction of rural life alongside a Native American tribal area facinating. I have no idea how accurate it is (being English and having never visited that part of the USA) but it reads and feels real.
I am so pleased that I found this author. I have read all his books that I have been able to find and loved them all.

Stumbled across this series after catching the tv series on TCM, bought the first book THE COLD DISH out of curiosity, one of the best books I have ever read, this series has everything, great characters, magnificent scenery, complex crimes (without being shockingly violent and gory) and a gentle humour that has you laughing out loud while reading, If you are looking for a great read look no further.
