Serpent's Storm is the third book in Amber Benson's Calliope Reaper-Jones series. Calliope (Callie to her friends) is back but she faces the toughest challenge yet to try and save her family and herself from some dangerous enemies some of whom may be a lot closer than she thinks.
If you are new to this series I really would recommend that you read the Death's Daughter and Cat's Claw before picking up Serpent's Storm. Amber has also included enough of Callie's back story so that the reader would be able to follow the story. However you will get a much greater sense of who Callie is and the journey she has taken this far if you read the previous two novels first.
The success of the series has been Amber's ability to blend her rich vision of the afterlife which incorporates many religious and mythological figures but does so without insulting anyone's beliefs or cultures. Instead it celebrates them and incorporates them into a unique and original world which has its own rules and customs. This combined with believable characters with their own personalities, Calliope the heroine of this series is the best example of this. She may have a powerful birth right but that does not make her invincible or perfect. Indeed like all of us she has her talents, strengths, vulnerabilities and doubts. You won't always agree with the decisions she makes but at the end of the day loyalty and her sense of humour shines through and you can't stop rooting for her. One of the things I enjoyed the most when reading Serpent storm was to see just how much Callie had developed as a person from when we first meet her in Death's Daughter. Serpent Storm has a much darker tone than in the previous two novels in the series, as death strikes close to home and relationships are stretched to breaking point. Fear not Callie's trademark of occasionally juvenile but very funny (at least in my opinion) sense of humour remains.
So strap yourself for Calliope's most dangerous adventure yet, who knows what fresh new enemy will burst forth from the gates of hell it could be anything, even a giant chicken, on second thoughts that's not very likely but keep an eye out for a Serpent.
