After a somewhat lacklustre third entry, Weis and Hickman play to their strengths in 'Serpent Mage'. All the requisites of high fantasy are included, with elves, dwarves and magic vs. science. These factors are cleverly blended with the strong Death Gate scenario, brimming with originality and ideas. The setting does not overshadow the plot, with less premable and backstory than previous entries - Haplo's journey is central to the action and mayhem. Good characterisation and clever use of narrative styles create an engaging story, utilising the Death Gate scenario to almost reinvent an old angle. At times the story seems a little forced, with some trite dialogue and clumsy foreboding, however overall Serpent Mage is a worthwhile and inventive read.

This fourth instalment delves more into the inner conflict of Haplo the patryn and his "love hate" relationship with Alfred. Many more revelations of the actual sundering are revealed with Alfreds discovery of the original council of seven. The only disapointing aspect of the book are the weak mench caracters who, unlike the previous books do nothing for the overall Grand tale. Still, a not to be missed instalment in the series.

I really loved the world of Pryan, but this comes in very close second. The authors have increadible ability at creating unique interesting worlds is unbelievalbe. The whole series is like nothing youve ever read, this just adds to the excitement. I like the introduction of the dragonsnakes and how the mysterys of Alfred become a little clearer. Go get it!

This has got to be one of the best series that I have read. The first three were awsome, and it is developing rapidly. Once I read the first book, I couldn't put it down. Read more

YES!!!
Extremely wonderful, as with the entire series. We get to see more of Alfred here, which is good; predictably, Chelestra is just as well-conceived and fascinating as Arianus,... Read more

The series is still running strong.
After getting through the initial 100 pages, I couldn't put it down for the final 350. It's a good read.
