I've used Serif products for 20 years and always found them to be powerful, reliable and backed up by Serif's knowledgeable and helpful UK-based technical support team.
PagePlus Essentials is a scaled-down version of the superb
PagePlus X4 (PC CD) program which is the best DTP package I've ever used (see my review) and is aimed primarily at the home, small-business or hobbyist group market, including both beginners to DTP and those with a little experience. It is a highly-intuitive package with powerful layout tools but it's also quick and easy to learn so that documents can be produced quickly with little or no previous desk-top publishing experience.
A broad variety of templates are included for home and business stationery, greetings cards, business cards, newsletters, calendars etc and all are fully-customisable. Photos can be replaced using drag and drop then edited using the simple editing tools including. Text can be added or replaced, fonts changes (a wide selection are included) and an almost infinite range of background fill colours, tints and textures are just a click of a mouse away. Simply drag and drop items to exactly where you'd like them to appear so that you have full control of your finished document which can then be exported as a PDF file for printing, sharing or emailing. The only limit is your own personal creativity and, if you're not particularly artistically inclined then the included templates will provide a good starting point.
Essentials is a less-powerful and less-comprehensive package which is aimed more towards the home-user wishing to produce cards (business and greetings), labels, forms, calendars, stationery for a home or small business or a small organisation wishing to produce its own stationery and newsletters. Essentials offers most of X4's main features with the exception of being able to import PDF documents for editing and outputting press-ready commercial PDF output including Pantone colour matching. For a typical home or hobby-group user, these features simply won't be needed. Also, it won't produce websites so if you're looking for DTP which can also produce a co-ordinated website then you'll need the highly-powerful X4 version.
A good purchase for anyone wanting to get started in desk-top publishing.
