Serif PhotoPlus 6 is a fun little photo-editing package that sets out its palettes and tools bar in much the same manner as more expensive programmes such as Adobe's Photoshop or Corel's PhotoPaint. Tools are laid out in a bar to the left of the screen with tool tips appearing at the bottom of the screen. By default palettes or tabs appear at the right but they can be closed or moved around. Effects and filters are accessed from drop-down menus. The advantage is speed: everything is available with just a couple of clicks. It's all straightforward if you have used any other mid- to high-end photo editor, but can be a bit daunting to newcomers. There is a brief manual to help start off. Bundled on the CD are 400 free fonts and 600 animated GIFs plus a bonus CD with Kai's Power Show so you can turn your pictures into PC-based slide shows.
Serif PhotoPlus 6 is a fraction of the price of the high-end software, and is good photo-editing software for the hobbyist. Although it covers most of their functions and tools, it isn't as professional or slick in its output. There are a couple of annoying bugs; using the gradient tool inside a selection produces a fill in the wrong place and the layer blend modes mysteriously change when calling up the property menu. Still, Serif PhotoPlus 6 is very neat and cheap for the photo-editing power it offers, and in the end you get what you pay for. --John Cranmer

This natty image editor raised a few eyebrows around here. It offers features like a powerful Layer Manager, normally restricted to the likes of Paint Shop Pro and Serif still managed to dispense with the hefty price tag!
Other features I really like the web related ones, including hotspots and image slicing.
Apparently you can use PhotoShop plugins with PhotoPlus. Not that you would need them...
If you new to editing, not only is this program easy to use, but it is sufficiently similar to PSP/PhotoShop to allow you to follow the step-by-step guides that are scatterd over the web.

What can I say? It's flexible, powerful, has advanced features, and is a rival to many of the more expensive packages (such as Photo Shop etc). At this price, it's well worth a look - I can thoroughly recommend it. It's a fairly small installation, and doesn't use a huge amount of system resources to run. It has many features you wouldn't expect, such as the ability to import pictures direct from a (TWAIN) digital camera. PhotoPlus 6 is about a quarter of the size of the software that came free with my camera, and does the job better! Far more flexible and stable.
PhotoPlus 9 has been recently released, and since I was so impressed with version 6, I thought the upgrade would be well worth while. I couldn't find a huge amount of extra features or fuctionality, and just don't think it was worth all the extra expense. PhotoPlus 6 is excellent on its own - not much room for improvement.
