5.0 out of 5 stars Dexter Johnson - heres why he should be better remembered, 7 Sep 2011
This review is from: Superstar De Dakar (Audio CD)
do you like latin jazz?, do you think music by people such as Israel Lopez Cachao, or the Tico All Stars were probably some of the best live music put to disk. Here is a disk well worth listening to

on here there are at least 6 seriously good tracks - Salsa La Ma, Prepare Candela, Esta Mon Ridava, La Sistiera, El Corason, Guantanamera.

It isnt purist latin jazz admittedly - the spanish language certainly wasnt the bands natural one. The spanish used in the songs is not even correct some of the time, and there is plenty of background noise to help distract. Considering that they were emulating or covering cuban songs the one thing they havent copied is the depth and layering of the percussion - It can be sparse on tracks like La Sistiera, where main vocals and sax bounce off each other. On any song here though - even if you hate what they have done to a latin jazz classic there will be 5 or 10 seconds of beautiful sax playing. Dexter Johnson was one he.. of a good sax player
