The latest Frank Quinn novel from the New York Times bestselling author John Lutz.

Product Description

A New York restaurateur, Millie Graff, is followed home from work by a man who forces her into her apartment and tortures her before killing her. She is found with her hand wrapped around a silver cross on a necklace. She's been gagged, sexually violated and then skinned alive.

As Quinn and his associates follow the path of the killer known as 'The Skinner', another woman's desperate search for the truth will bring her into the crosshairs of a killer with a burning desire to settle old scores. Quinn and Pearl must rush to Missouri to confront the monster before yet another life is lost.

Praise for John Lutz:

'Lutz has produced another procedural masterpiece.' Booklist

'A page-turner to the nail-biting end, the fifth Frank Quinn investigation will leave readers breathless... Misleading clues and dramatic suspense will keep readers pondering the intricacies of this twisty, creepy whodunit long after the last page is turned.' Publisher's Weekly starred review.

I haven't read any other books in the series, or by John Lutz for that matter, but I found this to be a great psychological thriller full of suspense. Quinn (A PI) is hired to investigate a gruesome killing by the Commissioner of the NYPD, it all becomes personal when he recognises the victim. The murder turns out to be the beginnings of a serial killers rampage and Quinn and his slightly off-beat team fight against the clock to stop him and save his latest victim. The killer is, well sick, and his peeling of his victims earns him the nickname `Skinner'. The suspense is built up through a number of dead-ends and wild goose chases set up by the intelligent psychopath that keep you wanting to read on. We are also shown Quinn's home life and there is generally a good, well-developed, set of characters that help to give a fast-paced story more depth. Alongside the main investigation is the running sub-plot of Beth, her rape and how it eventually connects to the current events. There is a little bit too much `tell' in Lutz's description, but not enough to slow down the pace or really offend the reader's intelligence. Still, one I couldn't put down and definitely recommend.

Serial by John Lutz 30 Dec 2011

Admittedly I haven't completely finished the book yet, but the plot isn't something I will be commenting about.

This book isn't terrible, but it's not wonderful either. For me it's not a page turner; if I wasn't so determined not to leave any book unfinished, I would have put it down and forgotten about it by now. The plot isn't too bad, 21 chapters in, that is, but I find that nothing's really progressing. A murder happens, the characters appear to dilly-dally around, and then another murder happens, and they dilly-dally around a bit more. There's no depth into the investigation in this story, which, after reading Karin Slaughter's work, is what I believe makes a crime story. Otherwise it's just a fiction story with a bit of death and drama thrown in.

That's exactly what this is.

I'm disappointed, to be honest. And yes, I am only 21 chapters in, but now that I've got this feeling it's going to stay with me until the end. This book doesn't excite me. Doesn't make me sit on the edge of my seat. Honestly, I'm bored, and I know I shouldn't be - this is a crime fiction story.

But I am very picky about crime books - so don't be too put off by my review. Give it a go. After all, it's only £1 (during the Kindle 12-day deal only, however) and you never know, it may be the book for you.

Just not for me.
