This album is an excellent introduction to the utterly fresh melodies of Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66. The atmosphere is light and summery, the feeling is sun-drenched and somewhere between sweet lovelorn melancholy and joyful knowing delight. Rock music it ain't, but that's no bad thing in itself! This music is perfect morning music, there is such a feeling of optimism and delight at the world.
This collection features songs from some of Mendes' best albums (especially "Equinox", a personal favourite), with "Mais Que Nada" probably best known in the UK through its use in an advert a few years back. There are also a large selection of their covers, such as "Scarborough Fair" and "With A Little Help From My Friends" which while helpful in introducing the band to strangers, probably skew things too heavily towards non-orginals (does there really have to be FOUR Beatles covers?). Especially when they could write songs of the magic of "Night and Day"!
All the same, if you require an introduction to the magical world of Mr Mendes, you could do far worse than pick this up. Treat yourself.
