First, the book is in Italian.
Second, it is a wonderful book. It is the real history of Sergeant Major Mario Rigoni, told by his own words, following the Russian retreat of the Italian Army in the winter 1943. He was part of one of the elite platoons of Alpini (Italian mountain troops) that headed the retreat, forcing the Russian pince that was closing over the entire Army.
The hardship of cold, the joy of comradeship, the generosity of a man who was a son of the Alps, and much more, are described in the book; a book that you cannot stop reading once you've commenced it.
