5.0 out of 5 stars =Great Work...Great Inspirato!= 11 Sep 2006
By Shane White - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Mary Balcomb has written an intriguing story of the life and times of Sergei Bongart, a widely respected "artist's artist". The layout of the book is also very well done. This book was not cheap to make, as there are tons of images to look at, many taking up the whole page. If all art books were laid out like this, I think there'd be a lot more satisfaction from the art community. Definitely not stuffy museum literati! Buy it now!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sergei Bongart 12 Jan 2008

The quality of the reproductions is high. The larger images allow the viewer to study brushwork and broken color. Including images of Bongart and his suroundings is also appreciated.
5.0 out of 5 stars It helps that this man is the genuine article 19 Mar 2014

A well-written book about a true artistic genius and unique personality. His life story is dramatic and he lived it full force until his last day. I have taken a workshop from one of his proteges (Ovanes Berberian) who teaches Bongart's methods. Bongart's specific style and theories of painting live on because of the indelible mark he made on the art world. Berberian's work has his own touch but is marked by the ideas and color theory that originated in Bongart's studio. If you are not familiar with either of these men's paintings, you are in for a very delicious art treat. Highly recommend.

Ms. Balcomb did a wonderful job collecting quality art images and information from Sergei Bongart's life and art from his students who are a fabulous testament to his incredible talent. This book is a must have in your library if you are a serious artist, art historian, or investor. Thank you Mary for all your diligent research making this a terrific investment.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rare art book 20 Mar 2012
By MIki - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
It was fortuitous that this book could even be purchased. The book arrived in excellent condition wrapped in plastic for protection. The color of the plates and the biographical sketch of the artist, Sergei Bongart are enchanting. Since taking up oil painting, this book has proved to be an invaluable tool for inspiration, technique and to live vicariously through a larger than life Russian artist, bon vivant and rugged individual.
