Book Description

21 Oct 2008 Serenity (Dark Horse)
Serenity: Better Days follows everyone's favorite space cowboys in a thrilling, action-packed adventure, where Mal and his crew take on a heist that promises a big payoff. But when one of Serenity's crew is taken captive and tortured, the gang must put their enduring differences aside and work together to save one of their own, even if it means losing the cash prize of a lifetime! Joss Whedon returns to the world of his blockbuster film Serenity, reuniting with Brett Matthews and Will Conrad, his collaborators on the bestselling 2005 series Those Left Behind.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shiny! 5 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
There are several stories in the Serenity universe that, until now, have been a little difficult to get hold of. There is already
precious little Firefly and Serenity canon and this volume does little to offset the sadness among Browncoats pining for more screen-time
but for most of us, any addition is welcome. If you've come this far and have no idea what a Browncoat or a Firefly is, you better go
and watch Firefly and Serenity, though I expect that if you're looking at this graphic novel, you already know what to expect, gorrammit.

Better Days (74 pages) takes place directly after Firefly. The crew of Serenity strike it rich and go on holiday, but when one crewmember
is captured, they have to risk their loot to bust the hostage out. It adds little to the overall Firefly/Serenity arc but there is an
interesting revelation about one character, and plenty of the eccentric adventures we've come to love. The art is spot on. It's followed
by a not-new foreword by Adam Baldwin (the same one from the paperback.)

Downtime (8 pages) is a short story previously available online. It's a behind-the-scenes tale about life aboard Serenity. There's no
new information but is faithful to the original characters and a fun read. It's my personal favourite from the collection.

The Other Half (8 pages) is another short story that was published on MySpace (?) so chances are you've never read it. It's an action-packed
heist where River saves the day again. It's pretty average but fun, and the art is great as always.

Float Out (25 pages) is a relatively new story, set after Serenity, that was printed in a one-shot comic book.

I do believe my own self that I'm going to be the first reviewer on Amazon to give this five stars. I am basing this on the current price of under a fiver, so the fact that it is quite short doesn't figure so much in my reviewing. The story very much feels like an unaired episode rather than anything special, and unlike Those Left Behind, it isn't there to tie any loose ends up, but that's not to say it's not worth having. As a fan of the series and the film, I enjoyed it and it took about the same time to read as to watch an episode, which was good. Fans of just the film may want to avoid it, but those who are fans of the TV series first and foremost - those who wish that Firefly ran for longer than it did - are likely to enjoy this graphic novel and surely wonder why there aren't more than two of them so far published.

Set between the firefly TV series and the serenity movie this introduces dust devils, browncoat terrorists. If you have no idea what I am talking about watch firefly. Anyway because it is set between two established stories there is a limit to what the writers can do witht the characters. As a result the story isn't that strong, but the characters are excellenty written and it is a joy to read. roll on volume 3.

4.0 out of 5 stars It looks and feels just right 18 April 2014
By Mr. Mice Guy TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The story from issues #1-3 of Dark Horse's second Serenity mini-series - `Better Days' - is collected, along with the one-shot comic "Float Out" and two short stories featuring River, as Serenity Volume 2: Better Days and Other Stories (Serenity (Dark Horse)). The writer and artists manage to capture the feel and look of the original TV series and film very well, though this story is definitely set during Firefly - The Complete Series [Blu-ray] [2002], well before the film and the first comic mini-series Serenity - Those Left Behind, as are the two short stories; `Float Out' is definitely set after the film Serenity [Blu-ray] [Region Free].

THE SPOILER ZONE
The story "Better Days" itself is fairly straightforward, though the opening action/robbery/chase sequence is a superb example of the `bait & switch' technique. The crew manage to acquire a vast amount of cash in exchange for some stolen technology. They live the high life for a while, until an Alliance special ops team comes looking for a former `Dust Devil', as rebel terrorists were known. Unfortunately, it is Captain Reynolds they are after, and the crew must chose between him and the cash... We get to see plenty of character background, a bit of the war, and a lot of interpersonal interaction. It could easily be an episode of Firefly, though with a bigger effects budget.

As I said above, it looks right, it sounds right, and it feels right.

3.0 out of 5 stars Short 9 Jan 2009
By M. G. Chisholm TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed the writing and the artist has done a fine job in recreating the characters seen in the film and series, however it lacks depth and given the cost, is to say the least a tad short. I guess as part of the series of books it is needed and of course if like me you enjoy the Firefly universe then of course you will buy this book to continue the adventure.
