Book Description

16 Mar 2010
Here's How It Is... The Earth got used up, and we found a new solar system and used terraforming technology to create hundreds of new Earths. The central planets formed the Alliance and decided that all worlds should unite under their rule. There was some disagreement on that point. After the Unification War, many of the Independents who had fought and lost drifted to the edges of the system, far from Alliance control. Out here, people struggled to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work, a gun would help you keep it. A captain's goal was simple: find a crew, find a job, keep flying. The Serenity Role Playing Game lets you re-create the action of the 'Verse, the science-fiction setting created by writer/director Joss Whedon. Fly a ship out in the black, take jobs as they come, and always make sure you get paid. Everything you need to get started is right here! All you need is dice, friends, and your imagination. - A self-contained role playing game. All the rules are provided for both players and Game Masters! - Full character creation rules, plus fifteen sample characters-including the crew of Serenity. - Complete details on spaceships, guns, and technology. - Emphasis on story, action, and character development with easy-to-learn rules. - Game details and descriptions of the characters and settings of the film!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good system for an exciting setting. 11 Dec 2005
Format:Hardcover
The system is similar to others seen before, a points buy character creation system costing 6points to have a d6 to roll for an ability or skill.
Modify your points with Assets or Complications (modifiers to rolls) and you have a well rounded character with a personality, ready to play.
Also included are the ships and crews of Serenity and Aces & Eights, to jump right into the action with your favourites or a new, but fun to play crew.
My favourite bit as a GamesMaster was to create a brand new ship, which acts as a seperate character than just its crew, and crew it with flawed heros, just trying to survive.
To do anything a difficulty number is used and you roll one dice for an ability, eg d6 Strength, and one for a skill, eg d10 Intimidate, if the total of those dice equal or beat the difficulty number then you succeed.
Easy for GamesMasters to run, very fun and easy for RolePlayers to play.
Highly recommended for Serenity/Firefly fans and recommended for people bored with d20/d10 systems.
Good Job Joss!

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorram excellent! 29 Jun 2007
Format:Hardcover
As a roleplayer and a fan of Joss Whedon's excellent series 'Firefly' and the Big Damn Movie I found this book useful and very interesting.

The rule system is extremely easy to get used to and can easily be understood by both new and experienced players. Rather than useing a fixed dice, which usually characterises an RPG (such as D20 (D&D) or D100 (stormbringer)) the dice changes depending on how good a characte is at doing something. As an example, a character who is a gunfighter may have D6 in guns and D10 in pistols as a specialisation. A character who is bad with the guns skill may however only have a D4 (compotent) in the skill. Character generation is also very simple and full statistics of the crew of 'Serenity' are included.

The background information given on the 'verse is also very good and interesting. As is the artwork and the book itself is set out very clearly.

All in all it is prety damn shiny.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent rpg system for an excellent setting. 16 May 2008
Format:Hardcover
The cortex system (the game rules) is a slightly different take on the usual rpg dice system, but not a huge variation. That said it is pretty easy to use and the skills system in particular opens up a lot of possibilities. The book is self contained, so you do not need to buy countless books to get the most out of it. However the book doesn't really have quite enough setting information for some peoples tastes, including me, but I was able to find out much of what I wanted online by looking up serenity and firefly rpgs and the show/film. As a games master I greatly enjoyed the challenge of creating a game the was recognisible as set in the firefly/serenity setting but was also not just retreading the show. I spent a while researching all I could about the planets in the 'verse and creating my campaign. well worth a look for all role players.
