Serenades,
By A Customer
This review is from: Serenades for Strings (Audio CD)
A fascinating study of the development of the serenade from its light entertainment function in 18th century to its appearance as a full orchestral work in the 19th century. Tchaikovsy's serenade is deceptively simple. However within its simple charm, there are scales, waltzes, elegies, russian folk songs. Suk is not well known outside Eastern Europe and his work deserves more attention. In particular his serenade for strings has an intense romantisism, somewhat oppressive atmosphere. This is the piece that launched Suk's career in Austria.
