Product Description

Young Killian Melville is arguably the most brilliant architect of the age; passionate about his art, he is liked by everyone. So when he visits Sir Oliver Rathbone, in need of a lawyer to represent him over his alleged 'breach of promise' to marry the daughter of his patron, Rathbone agrees despite his misgvings. The case is not an easy one. Zillah is beautiful and even-tempered, heiress to a fortune and a good friend. What more could any man want? And why would Melville risk losing the professional reputation he has worked all his life to build? Frustrated by his client's refusal to divulge any further information, and convined he is keeping something from him, Rathbone, his own professional integrity at stake, decides to ask his close friend Hester Latterly for an objective opinion about the case. She, meanwhile, has contacted William Monk to investigate a mysterious family matter from twenty years ago. Little do they realise that the three of them are about to tackle the most baffling and complex case with which they have ever been faced...

Format:Paperback
Readers should be aware that this is the SAME book as Breach of Promise by Anne Perry. Published under a different title presumably for the US market. BEWARE!

I don't think I could ever totally trash any book that Anne writes. As usual, Oliver, Hester, and William make a great team, and the big surprise that comes right after the murder midway through the book made me gasp out loud. . .as did the resolution of the subplot involving the investigative work William does for Miss Jackson. But when I turned the last page, I said to myself, "Hold on here! Is this case concluded or not?" Frankly, half the fun of seeing the mystery solved is the big final scene where the big society person gets exactly what's coming to him or her. Well, I checked to see if any pages had been torn out of my library copy of the book. Nope. All I can say is, "Anne, don't be in such a big hurry to get your book to the publisher next time." This one suffers from the same thing that made me stop reading John Grisham--a hurried ending that leaves significant pieces of the plot unresolved. Resolve the mystery next time and keep us guessing about the relationships, not vice versa. Anne, you've done better. . .and you can do it again:)

Anne Perry is marvelous! She manages to add just the right amount of information to her books that leaves you tingling with anticiption of the next book. Breach of Promise is definitely toward the top on my list of favorites. The Monk novels are just wonderful!

The book was very good, except the mystery wasn't concluded.
The mystery wasn't one of her best, but it wasn't too bad. The blossomed relationship between Monk and Hester made up for it. Read more

I'm casting the movie!
I've decided it's time to cast the William Monk movie! Easy. Ciaran Hind, that dark, brooding, wonderful Anglo-Irish stage actor, is Monk. Read more

I have been reading Anne Perry's books for many years and this is one of her best! I've always been a bigger fan of the Pitt's but with this book I've "switched sides".

not bad ... but not her best one
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers - we were cheated of an ending somehow, but I didn't really mind that lots of things were left to my imagination. Read more
