Angie Sage creates quirky characters that seem to spring to life from the pages into your imagination.
There's something memorable about each of her characters, from the eccentric Aunt Zelda and her famous cabbage sandwiches to the stroppy, yet likeable Lucy Gringe (you get to know her by book four but look out for more of her and Wolf Boy in Syren#
Each of the stories in this box set is well thought out and hooks you. I like the little sub-plots in each of the books with the trials and tribulations #though mostly trials) of Stanley the Rat.
Beyond the characters are the places and she has created really wonderful scenes. The Marram Marshes, with Aunt Zelda and home of the Boggatt and The Port which is home to a rather scary coven of witches.
It has it all - a world to lose yourself in, characters that are individual and despite the wizard boy thingy this is original...it's difficult for writers in this genre critiqued against the HP books but it's not something I would compare really. The stories are very much her own, the world she has created is her own and Angie Sage is undoubtedly a fantastic story teller.
I love all the characters, the intimadating Extraordinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand is one of a kind, not least of all for her shoe fixation.
I have no criticisms of these books, I have another bit of praise - each chapter begins with a little illustration, drawn by the author herself. Really lovely pictures too. I particularly like the pictures of Beetle, Wolf Boy; Snorri Snorrelson and Lucy Gringe.
