5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, 27 Jan 2007
By Jack Crankson "Jacko" (London, England) - See all my reviews
This is a record rich in theme, melody and intent. There are no bad tracks. no filler and moreover it feels wonderfully familiar on the first listen.

Findlay Brown is an extraordinary songwriter who according to interviews he's given recently in the press was saved from a jobbing career in the army by a teenage experience with Jimi Hendrix and LSD. There are three strands which appear inform Findlay's songwriting craft: the folk music produced during, and influencing the music of, the sixties, twisted psychedlia (at its best on 7 minute trip out track Don't You Know I Love You), and straight forward singer songwritery such as the title track Separated By The Sea.

This is a beautiful modern record which manages to evoke the spirit of some of the sixties most celebrated acts - the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, Crosby Stills and Nash, and the Beatles - whilst remaining contemporary and fresh. Next to the dull plasticity of a James Blunt this is an exciting addition to the world of the singer songwriter - file somewhere between Norah Jones and Ryan Adams.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fine, fine debut, 22 Feb 2007
By S. Phillips (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Stunning. Beautiful songs, beautifuly sung. If you heard it without knowing anything about it, you might guess that it is some long-lost album from the sixties - it just has that sound and atmosphere, with the occasional echoes of Nick Drake-like string arrangements.

"Come Home" has already turned up in a Mastercard advert, and with a little airplay in the right place, this could be huge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long awaited, 19 Feb 2007
By Booky (Canterbury, UK) - See all my reviews
If you heard the releases last year and have been waiting for the cd release, you will not be disappointed. No surprises really, but it delivers on the early promise. Down Among the Dead Men is the standout, but there's plenty here to enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's just ok....
Seems like anybody who picks up a guitar gets compared to N Drake these days, well in a mountain of solo troubadours this is ok but nothing to get too excited about. Read more
