Product Description

Review

Aubrey Menen I think it is the best-written, best-designed, and most moving novel I have read in many years. Beginning with a tiny incident among ordinary boys, it ends by being as deep and as big as evil itself. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

Product Description

One of a series of top-quality fiction for schools, this is the story of a friendship between two 16-year-old boys in an American boarding school - one a natural athlete and the other a scholar. Their different temperaments cause tensions that lead to tragedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book tells the truth about human nature, 28 May 1998
By A Customer
A Separate Peace is probably one of the best books I have ever read. The characters are portrayed so realistically and the situations in which they find themselves, though not easily relatable these days, have a solid basis in a friendship anyone would be lucky to know. My parents bought this book for me, along with To Kill a Mockingbird, when I was 11 and I didn't read either for years. When I was 14, I read To Kill a Mockingbird and fell in love with it, but I just couldn't get through A Separate Peace. When I started college, I took a course in adolescent fiction, where this book was required reading -- and it quickly became obvious why. The characters came alive, and reading this at a time when I was away at a college in New England gave it all the more meaning. I know it is written for teenagers, but I can't help but think, especially after reading some of these reviews, that this is a book that can be truly appreciated after high school.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story rich in imagery and symbolism, 23 Dec 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
The year is 1942, the setting a boys' school in New Hampshire, the narrator Gene Forrester, now in his thirties, as he looks back at his last years at Devon School for Boys. His room-mate and best friend was Phineas, athletic and enigmatic, processing a charm, vitality and way with words that would soften the hardest of masters. Gene, excelling academically while Phineas does in sports, takes us through the final years of their schooling and his remarkable friendship with Phineas, all set against the background of WW2 and the looming threat of becoming and active part of that war.

It is a beautifully told story, rich in imagery and symbolism. The friendship the two boys enjoy is heart warming and touching, yet there is hint of a darker undercurrent that could possibly lead to ruin that keeps the reader in a gentle suspense.

An excellent read! I sometimes wish i had never read A Seperate Peace, only so i could read it all over again with fresh eyes and think wow! I do re read sections every now and then and love them just as much but nothing is as good as the first time you read this book. It is delightfully surprising and moving. i felt a list of different emotions whilst reading this and express a smile every time i think of it. An excellent read!
