Reviews

Documentary following Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys as he takes off on a transcontinental road trip in search of his long-lost Patagonian uncle. As he traverses South America to track down his poncho-wearing guitarist relative, Rene Griffiths, in the Welsh-speaking enclave of Patagonia, Gruff finds time along the way to take in live musical performances in the theatres, nightclubs and desert tea houses of Wales, Brazil and the Argentine Andes.

A fun, trippy, funny, and totally endearing and somehow touching music doc/travel odyssey. Fantastic historical overview, amazing scenery, and a thoughtful look at family, roots, and colonization. Gruff as the ever searching, humble hero here. Fantastic music (it's Gruff - one of the greatest songwriters of our times, so what do you expect).

A true delight.

I had the privilege of viewing this film at a showing in Cardiff attended by Gruff himself. Crammed full of interesting tidbits on early Welsh immigration to the Southern Americas, the film catalogues Gruff's attempts to track down one of his early musical heroes. Full of Gruff's unique humour, inventive music and lots of interesting people and places. Highly recommended! Sorry, but I suck at writing reviews. Just watch the film.
