This book was developed from the author's work with profiundly handicapped children at a special needs school. Their sensory impairment meant that accepted teaching methods did not work as they were unaware of the world around them. Without senses of touch, smell, taste, sight, hearing and movement the children are isolated. In order to benefit from the school curriculum children with sensory impairment must learn to develop their senses, individually and in combination - a process the non-handicapped child goe sthrough unconsciously and spontaneously. This book outlines a curriculum for each sense in turn, using stimuli that can be adapted for the age of the child. These can be amalgamated to create a multisensory experience, and this newly developed awareness can be integrated into the rest of the school curriculum. Designed to help teachers working with children with profound multiple handicaps combined with sensory and physical impairment this book fills a long standing gap. Its carefully structured programmes are invaluable to all those in the educational, health and social services working with handicapped children and adults.
About the Author
Flo Longhorn has worked for many years with children with severe learning difficulties, both in Britain and in the United States. She now works as a special consultant in special needs in the UK and abroad.

If this is the first book you read by Flo Longhorn, then you will not be disappointed! Flo Longhorn who is a leading expert in the world of sensory teaching and children and adults with profound and mulitple or severe learning difficulties. Flo looks at teaching these 'special' people in a very inventive and stimulating way. A great deal of research has went into this book and it provides a wonderful basis for those who are interested in the field of sensory work.

I think this is an excellent book for any teachers in special schools. It gives you great ideas for lessons for children with severe and complex needs. Didn't give it 5 stars because it is a bit dated.

A Wonderful Resource

It is often difficult to find meaningful resources for teaching children and adults with multiple exceptionalities. So you can sense my utter relief and joy when I stumbled upon Longhorn's book at the library. Her enthusiasm and dedication for "very special people" is evident in her writing and creativity. I would definately recommend this book to any educator, even parent, of a "very special child".
