We have already suffered (but caught in the act) a Heating Oil theft and were not terribly happy with the rather erratic performance of the battery operated remote sensor alarm that the Police subsequently sold to us, although it is still in use.
This well thought out little Watchman Sonic Alarm device does exactly what it 'says on the label' and being a Theft Alarm as well as a Contents Indicator is a big and more reliable improvement on our earlier 'Probe style' contents level gadget.
The instructions are pretty good and the Watchman was very easy to fit apart from the need to enlarge the original 'probe hole' in our 10 year old plastic tank. It worked immediately and has proved to be totally consistent so far. The long battery life is appreciated.
Rather strangely the instructions included in the pack fail to mention the siren trial facility which is mentioned in the online pdf version. Our own trial of the siren worked well although we thought the sound was not loud enough to be heard in any room remote from our bedroom. Fortunately that bedroom is a good place to receive the Watchman signal.
At first we felt the Watchman was maybe a bit vulnerable to unauthorised removal until we realised that such an act would also trigger the siren.
This device is a great idea which targets significant loss of oil through leakage or theft actually where it happens. We no longer lose sleep listening for noises in the night.

... only time will tell whether the life time of the built-in lithium battery will be as long as claimed by the manufacturer. This product will hopefully redeem the reputation of the manufacturer who dared to put on the market the previous unreliable product (now withdrawn from the list of their products) which comprised a part closer to a DIY job than to a properly manufactured one: the length of standard 15mm diameter copper pipe pompously called "antenna" contained 3 AAA batteries of very ordinary quality (incidentally this "spare" part costed a hefty £40 repeated too often to the like of unfortunate users!). That had to be said.
By contrast, the "Sonic Watchman Alarm Ultrasonic Oil Level monitor" uses the well proven ultrasonic technology for measuring the distance between the base of the device and the surface of the oil contained in the tank. Provided the installation simple steps - well explained by the manufacturer - are respected, the system will work properly and will display the level in the tank on the plugged unit with an acceptable accuracy. The useful feature of this product is the alarm going off if the oil level drops too quickly (leak or theft) or if the level is low enough to justify a prompt delivery from your usual heating oil supplier.
By contrast, the "Sonic Watchman Alarm Ultrasonic Oil Level monitor" uses the well proven ultrasonic technology for measuring the distance between the base of the device and the surface of the oil contained in the tank. When my first one failed I was daft enough to try and get help from the manufacturer. It was a month out of guarantee. On advice changed the battery and still it didn't work. I sent it back only to be told that having broken the seal, to change the battery, had invalidated the guarantee and they did nothing!!!. Having told this tale to a friend he showed me one in his drawer that also had failed. Then more and more people told the same tale. It works for a bit but is apparently badly enginneered and they fall like flies.

HIGH FAIL RATE AND SHORT WARRANTY
