About the Author

Jane Charles has lived in the Midwest her entire life. As a child she would more likely be found outside with a baseball than a book in her hand. In fact, Jane hated reading until she was sixteen. Out of boredom on a long road trip she borrowed her older sister's historical romance and fell in love with reading. She long ago lost count of how many novels she has read over the years and her love for them never died. Along with romance she has a passion for history and the two soon combined when she penned her first historical romance, and she has been writing since with the loving support from her husband, three children and three cats.

This book is a lovely love story. The two main characters, Dillon and Emily are extremely likeable. The story follows them as they fall in love with each other over several weeks following a chance meeting when they are caught in heavy rain. The love between them is tender and sweet. Dillon is a gentleman and treats Emily with respect. However Dillon's love for Emily is soon tested when he finds out who her father was and his mother puts pressure on him to marry well. With the support of mutual friends they continue to meet in secret. Dillon eventually has choose between his parents or a life with Emily. There are several interesting twists and turns before they achieve their happy ever after. I enjoyed this story, it is a gentle romance between two honourable people. Dillon unusually is not a rake, there are no duels, forced marriages, unplanned pregnancies or ladies held hostage which often feature in historical novels. There are a few love scences but they are not too graphic. My only complaint with the story was that the story ended a bit abruptly. On the whole this is good old fashioned romance.

The errors in this book grate so much they really detract from quite a good story, the author appears to be the victim of an over enthusiastic auto correct and complete lack of a proof reader. If you can get past these random completely incorrect words the Americanisms are only moderately annoying.

I downloaded this for free when I was looking for something simple and mindless to read. There are a number of Americanisms that jar terribly - the male hero wears 'pants' instead of trousers/ britches, the picturesque cottage somewhere in the cotswolds has a 'stoop' - and some of the historical details are laughable. The book could also have done with some careful proof-reading, as there are a large number of spelling/ punctuation errors. That being said, the author shows some real talent and quite a good ear for dialogue.

Not the longest book in the work, but thoroughly enjoyable none the less.

I snagged it as a freebie download, but there is no doubt I would have been happy enough to pay for this book, and actually have now added other books in the series to my Wish List, and am eagerly looking forward to reading the other sub-character stories.

All in all a 4 star read, it could have been a 5 though if the author had developed the plot - thus lengthening the story - to obtain a full novel.
