Review

"Most readers who have ever read (and LOVED) the works of Jane Austen would find "[Sense and Sensibility] "the perfect addition to their personal library (even if you already own a different edition of Sense and Sensibility)." --Classic Literature

Product Description

The first of Jane Austen s published novels, Sense and Sensibility began its life as Elinor and Marianne, which Jane first wrote when she was only 20 years old. Named after its two heroines, Elinor and Marianne, the novel tells the tale of sensible Elinor Dashwood, the older of two sisters, who believes in privacy, propriety and logic, and flighty Marianne, the younger sister, who follows her heart without so much as a second thought for the consequences. The story unfolds in the aftermath of the death of the sisters father, as the two women fall in love, have their hearts broken, and finally understand the need for both sense and sensibility in order to find lasting happiness. Jane Austen made final revisions to her early work in 1809, having given it the name Sense and Sensibility by which, of course, we know it today. As much a comment on social etiquette as a story about love and belonging, this timeless favourite illuminates Jane Austen s world. This beautiful new edition, published to coincide with the bicentenary of the book s original publication in 1811, brings together Jane Austen s complete and unabridged text with 75 original artworks by Niroot Puttapipat , each capturing the spirit of Regency England with stunning and evocative accuracy. Sense and Sensibility is the first of six specially produced Bath Bicentenary Editions of Jane Austen .

This book has a lovely weight and feel, and the illustrations are consummately beautiful, and echo the work of Arthur Rackham. The illustrator Niroot Puttapipat illustrates the important episodes in Sense and Sensibility with charm and grace, and the faces of the woman, men, and even the horse are done with elegance and skill that are very pleasing to the eye. The illustrations serve to enhance the book, and make it a modern day classic. I love this book, and I will reread Sense and Sensibility just to enjoy an old friend with a new look!

This beautiful book is well worth the price, even if you are required to pay the full £20, and there's a good chance it'll be much less than that, as we bargin hunters know.

Not a "carry everywhere" copy, as it's a hefty weight and size, but a lovely version of one of our favourite stories to celebrate it's first arrival among the reading public, 200 years ago.

There are 10 colour plates of scenes from the story scattered among the pages, well drawn and attractive in themselves. Then - theres' a generous scattering of silhouette (i.e. "black and white" type)scenes all suitable to the period, and story, additionally. The pages are a soft cream - very restful to the eye, and of a pleasing thickness. Chapters are begun and ended with delicate decorative features, and a ribbon marker adds another touch of elegance.

A delightful start to a collection I'll look forward to adding to.

If you're an Austen fan, treat yourself. If you know a fan - this would be a perfect gift. Paperbacks or e-books are fantastic, but this is a collector's "find" to treasure.

Beautiful from cover to cover 29 Dec 2011

One of Austen's masterpieces is enough, but Niroot Puttapipat's illustrations make it all the better. Each full illustration is delicate and charming with gorgeous colors and lush textures. The black-and-white ones are equally beautiful - anyone that loves reading his version of "The Night Before Christmas" to their children will recognize the style.
