Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Sense is mostly a better-than-average pop record with a couple of truly wondrous moments on it; but it is at least partly a lesson in the importance of sequencing an album. The best and the worst thing about Sense is the fact that both of the two opening tracks, "Sense" and "Life Of Riley", are pretty much as good as it gets: the former, a collaboration with Terry Hall (ex-Specials, Fun Boy Three) is a gorgeously and unabashedly corny love song; the latter, a welcome to the world for Ian Broudie's new son Riley, was correctly held by the BBC to contain just the right balance of exuberance and beauty to qualify it as the soundtrack for the Goal Of The Month competition on Match Of The Day. Beyond those two giddying peaks--both of which are, naturally, included on The Lightning Seeds' best-of album, Like You Do--the quality might be charitably described as uneven. The faintly country-ish "A Cool Place" is not without the wistful charm that Broudie at his best communicates so well, but far too much of the rest of Sense sounds like songs being played in the hope that a tune will turn up eventually. --Andrew Mueller

An Overlooked Classic 20 Feb 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Rightly or wrongly I have always viewed this album as somewhat overlooked, a symptom of the dreaded 'second album syndrome'. Artistically, however, nothing could be further from the truth. I have often described this album as The Lightning Seeds get depressed, but then, a degree of poignancy runs through all of their records, but this is a little more miserable than most. And its beautiful. The album begins optimistically enough with 'Sense' and 'Life Of Reilly'. Then the songs take on a darker slant beginning with 'A Cool Place'. 'Where Flowers Fade' is a sublime piece of songwriting, and 'A Small Slice Of Heaven' and 'Tingle Tangle'(awful title, brilliant song)are fantastic tunes. My personal favourite song is 'Marooned', and the final track 'Thinking Up Looking Down' is one of the greatest album closers ever - it is emotive and beautiful with the final refrain of "I miss those days" always bringing a lump to my throat. Don't ignore this album - it is as relevant as all their other albums, and, if you twisted my arm to rank the Lightning Seeds albums in order of preference, I would rank this second.

Just a brilliant album 4 April 2008
Format:Audio CD
Ian Broudie, master of the melodic riff, creates several masterpieces on this album. Of all the Lightning Seeds offerings, for me this is the one. Broudie finds a way of enticing you into a song within a few bars - you can't wait to find what he has in store over the next few minutes. In the case of Sense, it's nearly all brilliant. Marooned to me is the perfect pop song - the backing makes Phil Spector look like a first grader.Tingle Tangle is one of the best Lightning Seeds songs and you still have Life of Riley and Sense, before digging into the other offerings. This album can be found very cheaply and is essential listening.

Quite good 13 April 2010
Format:Audio CD
After Cloud Cuckooland comes the second Lightning Seeds album. So this time we get three standout timeless tracks in Sense, Life of Riley and the closing Thinking up, Looking down, with a collection of pleasent mid paced summer pop songs. There's a number of guest appereances here and there as well. It's a better album than the first one, but only just.
