Book Description

1 July 2004
Kay Hooper is the brightest new star of suspense fiction. Now the New York Times bestselling author who’s built a reputation for keeping her readers’ pulse in the red zone delivers a thriller that will stun the senses—all six of them. This time a psychic special agent and a gritty cop must stop a brutal killer with a chilling M.O. and an unstoppable...Sense of Evil.

The victims are always the same: beautiful, successful, and blond. Someone was able to coax these intelligent and confident women away from safety. Someone was able to gain their trust long enough to do the unthinkable. Their shocking murders have terrified the inhabitants of a small, peaceful town where such heinous crimes are simply not supposed to happen. Police Chief Rafe Sullivan knows he has to find answers fast before another woman is lured to her death--but Sullivan literally doesn’t have a clue. And when the FBI sends one of their top profilers to help, he’s more than a little surprised that his new partner is nothing like the straight-by-the-book “suit” he expects.Special Agent Isabel Adams is tough, fearless, determined, and every bit Sullivan’s equal. She’s also psychic. And blond.Skeptical of his new partner’s ability to get inside the mind of a killer, Sullivan can’t deny that Isabel has tuned in to the killer’s wavelength, is following the twisted thoughts of a murderer obsessed with stalking, seduction, and death. But in getting so close, Isabel has set herself up as the next victim. Now, with time running out, she and Rafe will find themselves forced to take the greatest risk of all, because this psychopath is playing for keeps and Isabel is the perfect trophy. Unable to turn back, Isabel may have already gone too far. Smart, savvy, and confident, she may find that the very qualities that have kept her alive could turn out to be her undoing. For Isabel has entered the world of a cold-blooded monster who kills without mercy and eludes every sense but one...the sense of evil.

No to mention a cracking plot which moves along at a great pace and will keep you guessing. The magic is woven onto the plot with skill and subtlety and we do get to meet Miranda and Bishop at times through the book - though not a great deal, further interesting characters are also introduced.

The murderer is obviously an intelligent and personable individual - all of his victims are attractive, successful and intelligent women, all blonde - or are they? How does he manage to lure them to their deaths? Rafe has no ideas, no clues, no nothing and welcomes the involvement of the FBI. He's not impressed when their involvement turns out to be female, intelligent, beautiful and blonde, her extra 'investigative' powers leave little impression on him. However, as the pace builds and, as the say 'the plot thickens' Rafe and special agent Isabel begin to work together very nicely.
Tightly written with just enough of everything to leave you wanting more. I have to admit I missed Bishop and Miranda and hope they continue to make 'appearances' in further books in this series. Please don't tell me there are not going to be any!
If you haven't read the other's in the series then you are missing two great books - but you don't have to have read them to enjoy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Paranormal Romance Thriller 4 Jan 2008
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Long a fan of Kay Hooper's, I couldn't wait to get my hands on "Sense of Evil," and I must say I wasn't disappointed. However when I read it, I read as an old friend, someone who'd already accepted the FBI's fictional Special Crimes Unit as fact, someone who had already bought into the special powers of the Unit's investigators. So when my sea-going, writer friend Jack Priest came by my boat and asked me about it, my first inclination was to sing its praises, but then I realized, this man hadn't read any of the others, and therein lies the problem with this book, something I hadn't thought of, but something I have to mention in a review. This third book in the Evil series, in my opinion, relies a little to much on the ones that came before it. I knew this was true when I ferreted out my copies of "Touch" and "Whispers of Evil" and loaned them, along with "Sense," to my friend, recommending he read them in order.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed "Sense of Evil." I believe that Kay Hooper is one of the finest thriller writers going. I love the way she mixes romance and the paranormal stuff into her fast paced stories. She keeps you on the edge of your seat, she quickens your pulse and she makes you love her characters, especially in this book. I spent the next couple of days after finishing it, taking a boat from St. Martin down to Trinidad and I had Police Chief Rafe Sullivan and Special Isabel Adams in my mind the whole way. I replayed that book over and over and that is truly a high compliment, because there is a lot going on when you are at sea, many things that can steal your attention.

But good as the book was, I have to sadly take away a star because a book should stand all by itself. My advice is, if you've read the first two in the series, go out and get this one pronto, you'll love it. And if you haven't read "Touch" and "Whispers," then buy the paperbacks, read them, then move onto "Sense of Evil."

I give this book four stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars slight disappointment 1 Sep 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The book was good through out up until the end. The murderer was unexpected but it did end on a fairly short note. Not everything was explained or well enough to answer all the questions at the end which is what bothers me. There were a few references back to Miranda and Bishop and it helps to understand their characters if you read Out Of The Shadows (best book I've read of hers) of the Shadow Trilogy.
