As with any Sennheiser headphones I have tried, I cannot fault these headphones! Bass is clear, but not overpowering, mid and high frequencies are refreshing crisp and clear.

As far as looks go, they're not stunners - but are practical and comfortable.

An important thing to note if you are used to Apple's headphones with remote/mic on the cable for the Right earbud, is that with the CX880i, the remote is on the other side - the cable for the Left earbud. Not too much of an issue, but after a year of using Apple headphones, it's hard to break the habit of reaching for the remote on the right hand side!

Buttons on the remote are tactile and easy to press but not quite as elegant as the Apple headphones.
The Mic is positioned on the top of the remote - which is great as it's actually pointed at your mouth (Whereas the Apple mic is on the back, and picks up noise from your shirt rustling)

My biggest gripe, and reason for losing a star, is the case that is intended for storing the headphones.
It's leather (or faux leather) and well constructed.

But the problem is: It's huge.

3.5" x 2.5" x 1" (almost as big as my iPhone, and over twice as thick)
Not really the best solution for storing them when you're out and about!

I've now got to consider if I should neglect to use the case, possibly shortening their lifespan, or putting up with carrying around a bulky case wherever I go!

I owned a few other Sennheiser in-ear headphones and have been quite happy with the latest one (MM70i). The reason I purchased the CX880i is because the MM70i's iPhone/iPad plug got broken, and according to the very limited direct comparisons of the two models online, the CX880i is practically the same as the MM70i's, with an L-shaped plug instead of the straight one in the MM's. These plugs fit snugly in the headphone jack and the L-shape makes it much easier to pull out. The straight shaped plug was the reason why my MM's broke down after less than a year of careful ownership, and hence my reason to switch.

Unfortunately, the sound quality is not the same, especially if you like respectable bass response (the MM70i is great at reproducing low tones). Also, the in-ear pieces of MM's do a better job of sealing the ear canals than the CX's, canceling a significant amount of outside noise.

The main setback of the CX is its cable. It is very thin and feels no better than the ones in headphones provided in airplanes. This is unacceptable at this price point.

Overall, it's a good piece of equipment but feels like it won't last long.

When they work, the sound is pretty good, although wire noise is noticeable.

However, the ruggedness / build quality is appalling. I've got through four pairs of these. I had the first three replaced under warranty, but after this last pair stopped working, I've just given up on them. My total ownership time was about 12 months, allowing for delays in getting them replaced.

In every case the sound cut out in one or other of the earbuds. I won't claim to being the most careful owner, but I am far from the worst. For example, I don't wind the headphones tightly around my iPhone (which I know causes strain on the wires), but I have on occasion coiled the headphones and placed them in my pocket (rather than using the supplied case). Whatever I did, none of the headphones showed any physical damage when they stopped working.

I have treated every pair of headphones I've ever owned the same way, this includes a number of Sennheiser's cheaper models. Never have I experienced any headphones which so consistently broken. These will certainly be the last pair of Shennheiser's headphones I buy, at least for a few years.

I got these headphones after a recommendation and a test from a friend. I've had proper in-ear headphones before, but these are the first that fit my tiny ear canals and that don't cause any discomfort during extended periods of use. The remote is a bit sensitive compared to others I've tested, not a major issue though. The cable as well is a bit clunky and get stuck with bags etc.

The sound quality is good, the microphone is really good.

Pros: Sound quality, accessories, microphone, weight, fit
Cons: Price, remote sensitivity, cable clunkiness

Liking Sennheiser earphones and having been using their CX550 earphones with my HTC HD2 and then my iphone I was looking for a set of their earphones capable of controlling the volume on the iphone. I read the various reviews of the CX880i earphones here and elsewhere - including the comments about the need to ensure a good in ear fit to ensure good quality sound. It was therefore with some trepidation that I ordered the CX880is from Amazon.

So how did I find them? - All I can say is WOW!!! I found the sound quality to be excellent and the in ear fit very comfortable - in no time at all I forgot I was wearing them. The microphonic effect was much less than with my CX550s.

Any gripes? Well yes - I found that while single clicking the centre button to pause/play worked well - double clicking it to move to the next track was rather hit and miss (most of the time the iphone only reacted as if it was either a single click - and as a result paused the track - or as two single clicks - pausing and resuming play. But strangely a triple click to return to the start of the track was correctly recognised. So not sure if it's just me!!) Also I considered the case to be rather OTT and inconvenient to use (bit of a pain having to wind and unwind the cord) - so much so that I'm using the case that came with my CX550s instead as the CX880is fit in it easily.

Having said that they still deserve 5 stars for pure sound and build quality.
