I waited a while before I reviewed them, it's been nearly 2 years.

And I'm thrilled to say that even after a prolonged period of heavy use they still look virtually brand new, are working perfectly and sound fantastic.

This was my first (fairly expensive) pair of headphones after years of Sony in-ear buds and I've never looked back.

And unsurprisingly the Momentum's blow my Brother's beats out of the water in both build and sound quality.

If you're in the market for a solid pair of excellent sounding headphones, then you can't go wrong with these. Trust me, they are superb.

I received these as a 40th birthday present, and I'm well chuffed with them!

I've had quite a few pairs of headphones and earbuds over the years, from the likes of Sony, Panasonic, Sennheiser, Shure, Apple etc..

The first set of headphones I had though that blew me away (still have them) in terms of sound quality, was a pair of Sennheiser HD 480 II's, from the early nineties that cost around £45. The BBC use (or at least they used to) them for monitoring purposes, and a firm called Canford still make them albeit in a slightly modified form. Up until now no other set of cans I've owned has really come close, even from Sennheiser themselves. Some have sounded slightly clearer and more detailed, some have sounded more bassy, few however have come close to the overall natural balance of the 480's, including some more expensive ones. These Momentums however are fantastic. They have a very similar natural balance to the 480's, but are definitely more detailed. Even thought they are a closed back design, they sound very open, with a great soundstage. The bass is present, and goes down very low, but unlike some 'phones I've heard recently, it is not booming and does not colour or drown out the rest of the frequency range.

I listen to a wide variety of music, and these sound as good with Kraftwerk, as they do with Pink Floyd, Holst or 90's dance music!

I've used them both via my Hi-Fi amp's headphone output, and with my iPod classic, and they work great with both. I try to avoid any mp3/aac files encoded at less than 320kbps, and mostly use Apple lossless when importing CD's or recording from Vinyl, but even lower bit rate files on the iPod sound okay with these.

As a lucky owner of the full fat Momentums I was massively interested in trying out the new styled up and shrunk down version of the cans.

I have been a big fan of the Momentums and they have quickly become my go-to set of cans when looking for a relaxed listening experience.

So, what are the differences between the new Momentums and the old ones? Well, the first difference is the size, the cups are a good bit smaller on the new ones. Secondly, the headband has slightly less padding, thirdly the earcup padding is made from a synthetic suede that is very hard wearing (as opposed to the plush leather cups of the old Momentums) and fourth is the included case, whereas the old Momentums had a semi-rigid, form-fitting case, the new cans have a generically shaped case which is less rigid (but nonetheless very nice).

One other important difference I noted was the size of the headphone jack, the new cans seem to have shrunk the jack to miniscule proportions, the old cans had a very nice metal jack that could be adjusted from straight on to 90 degrees.

The pictures show the main differences.

Anyway, these cans ooze sex appeal, they are firmly aimed at the street market and will (hopefully) take some of the market share away from the god-awful Beats cans that the kids seem to think are the nuts.

Sennheiser is a well respected brand that has been in the game for a long time and their upper end cans such as the HD 800's and HD 650's have been praised by high-end audiophilles the world over. It is only right that the technology filters down to the lower range items. The original Momentums were highly praised for their styling and highly impressive sound quality.

to be honest these are now discontinued , and are a great buy at £59.99, I bought mine from currys at £39.99 if ya quick you might still pick up a pair . they come in a beautiful case and soft clothed bag. having tried them on for the first time , what hits you is how comfy they are .The sound is crystal clear and the bass just right . Give them to the wife for a min to listen to Ed Sheeran and got them back 2 hours later ..
Ive been in all the retail shops as you do trying out different head phones with your mobile tunes as you do lol, and these are up there with the best of them . so if you can get them at a discounted price well well worth it . I Think now the whole range of the 1.0 should be reduced as the 2.0 model is now at the forefront of The Momentum range ...

I love these headphones. They can be worn for hours with no discomfort, the faux suede and soft foam padding both on the cups and the interior of the headband are just the job. Lots of adjustment too. The cable is nice and light, with a remote which works both with my Android phone and my IOS devices. Said cable is also replaceable if it gets damaged or you prefer one without a remote (also supplied in the case). Styling is very nice - a bit retro with the exposed metal headband and stitched leather - but also quite trendy now and available in different colours to match your individual style. There is also a very handy protective case with a microfibre insert to keep them protected.

After burning them in by leaving them connected to my radio on two thirds volume for a day or so, I gave them a full work out on a range of music from Pink Floyd to classical guitar and some opera before some more recent chart type stuff. The 'phones seem to cope very well with all types of the music. I initially had a problem with the sound being a bit "muddy" when I played from my phone, but this turned out to be the Beats Audio function on the phone ruining the sound. Once turned off the music really began to sparkle. Whilst the bass is not too prominent as seems to be the fashion with many modern cans, there is a very nice balance of tones throughout the range, and with little adjustment I managed to get a very nice sound. The mids and highs are certainly very clear and crisp.

Overall then, if I take into account the styling (not so important for me), the price (quite a decider nowadays) and the sound quality (obviously the most important factor) then these are by far and away the best headphones I own. And according to my wife I own a lot of headphones!
