I'm a drummer. Drums are loud. Loudness causes tinitus. Tinitus isn't good.
Evidently, I needed to do somthing about this conflict of interest (my hearing vs playing drums), and I decided that the best route to go down would be to get a really good pair of isolation headphones. Which I did.
The HD280's lower sound levels significantly, meaning my drums & cymbals are not as loud, and the music I'm playing into my ears doesn't have to be as loud - All of which is fantastic. The same applies in other situations - In a car, all talking disappears, as does tyre and wind noise. This means you can listen to your music at a lower volume, and in turn not damage your hearing, and extend the battery life of your CD or MP3 player.
The sound quality is also fantastic, when using the HD280's, things will pop out of your music you have never heard before, new instruments, sounds, and somtimes even the band talking after or before songs. It is a completely revolutionary experiance.
The headphones are comfortable to wear for an extended length of time, and are not to heavy. The cable is coiled up, which means it very rarely gets snagged on anything, or tangled up. The ear & head pads, and the cable are all also easily replacable. The headphones also fold in a large variety of different fashions, you should be able to fit them into a bad one way or another!
    Overall, a fantastic purchase.

I have had these for about 3 months and have clocked about 300 hours of use. they are great when you get them out of the box and they just get better as they run in.

The sound is very finely balanced, the bass is not over done but drops very low, you will hear each string on that double bass. The mids have fantastic punch and the treble will make your ears tingle.

The closed back, ear muff pads and vice like grip mean the background noise just melts away, so you don't have to max out your player! Plug them in to a dedicated headphone amp for the best sound.

Just be mindful of the volume, these will really make your ears ring if not careful.

And yes, you will look silly in public.

These headphones are primarily geared for studio work - the bass is tight and fast, midband rich, and treble very clear and precise. And - they'll go REALLY loud.

The sound is as good as the recording (in other words, IF the recording is good, the sound will amaze you - but the headphones will not mask any imperfections of the recording!).

I got them only yesterday, so can't comment on the durability - but they seem very solid - go ahead, drop them on the floor! I can say, however, that I found them comfortable even after several hours of non-stop listening. They also block the unwanted noise (including my noisy colleagues at work) very effectively.

In short, a great buy - I am sure there are lighter and cheaper headphones out there, but I wouldn't bother - in my (rather extensive experience), this is a superb buy.

This, is my best gadget. Seeing as my house has been compared to a mad scientists' laboratory this is no mean feat. I got these headphones as a Christmas present last year and they continue to be my most essential piece of kit. First of all, a description.

These are fairly large over-the-ear headphones, although they do fold down to either go smaller or flat so you can put them in a drawer or briefcase. They are extremely comfortable and don't cause any discomfort; I've worn them for 5 hours at a stretch before with no problems.

Next, the sound quality. The first thing you'll notice if you're using these with an IPod or similar is that you can turn the volume down to half the usual level, because the sound is no longer leaking out to the surrounding environment. If anything this means you should be a bit careful of having these on full blast as they could do some serious damage. In fact when I'm on holiday I just plop these on a lampshade and use them as speakers. They're that good.

Finally, the sound isolation. Wear these on a plane and you don't hear the background chatter and engine noise. Wear them on the Victoria tube line and the screeching of metal on metal won't penetrate your skull. Use them to play computer games at 2am in the morning whilst your partner is sleeping in the next room and she won't hear a thing.

If only everyone who listened to music on a bus or a train had a pair of these we wouldn't be subjected to so much noise pollution. But if you have a pair of these, you won't care.

    Best. Gadget. Ever.

Sennheiser's HD 280 model headphones come in three variants - the Pro, the Silver and the 13. The HD 280-Pro is the original design and is uniform in colour and has 64 Ohm impedance. The Silver is technically identical to the Pro but has a plastic silver-coloured back-plate on each phone. The HD 280-13 looks identical to the Pro but has 300 Ohm impedance for connecting to higher output devices.

The HD 280s are professional monitor quality headphones which are ideal for critical monitoring applications in the studio but can also give astounding results when used with home audio equipment. They fit tight to the head to give a 32 dB attenuation of external noise which is better at higher than lower frequencies. They are a closed-back circumaural design, with a single, coiled (1m to 3m max) cable which enters the left side phone. They have a 3.5mm plug and Sennheiser provide a screw-on adaptor to 1/4".

I have the HD 280-Silver model and they have been my main HiFi phones for a couple of years; they also work surprisingly well with portable audio, although not really a portable headphone design! They need a long burn-in from new to achieve their best sound - I gave mine a couple of days and the sonic improvement was dramatic.

These phones will not improve the sound of any of your equipment and may make some sources sound worse. What they will do is give an accurate interpretation of whatever goes into them - and if used with a good HiFi source you will hear detail and depth you may have missed before. The old saying - rubbish in, rubbish out - is very true with these phones - they are true monitors and that is what they are designed to be.
