What can I say? I am completely in love with these headphones.
This is my second set of headphones from Sennheiser as my previous were the HD485. To compare them to the 485's I would say that they are on another level.
They are light in weight and very comfortable. The cups are quite large and feel spacious. The cups and the headband have a very soft material that feels really good.
The look of them is very sleek and stylish. The picture does not do them justice at all. The black material on the outside of the cups is very soft and is housed in a plastic grey surround for a nice contrasted finish.
The cable is pretty long and has a 6.35mm jack. It does come with a 3.5mm adapter but that makes the jack too long and may strain an ipod input so I bought another adapter that was cabled instead.
As far as sound quality goes, these headphones are excellent.
As they are brand new, they need some time to break in. First thing I noticed was that the bass wasn't as heavy as the 485's. The 485's are bass monsters but with further listening I started to realize that the bass on the 485 is not controlled and are actually overpowering.
The bass on these are more subtle and I know that it will get better as the 485 wasn't as heavy when the were brand new.
The treble is also more refined as the 485 would make you wince if it was too high. The 558 handles them at the same volume much better.
The 485 didn't have much mids at all. The 558 has better mids making the overall sound with bass, mids and nicely controlled treble a much better headphone than the 485.
The sound stage on the 558 is head and shoulders above the 485. The sound field is wider and incredible for movies. On the 485, I always use dolby headphone technology for an improved sound stage on movies and games. But with the 558, the sound field is so impressive that you can get close to the sound of dolby headphone without using it. There is a notch inside of the cups that they call the sound reflector. I believe that this is the reason for the impressive sound stage.
This is the headphone set that you want for movies and games.
Priced between the 518 and the 598, this is a good deal. If I wasn't impressed by the 558 then I would have returned them and bought the 598. But these headphones are exactly what I have been looking for.
My review of these are only my opinion as sound quality is objective and opinions are not facts.

To confirm in case you didn't already imagine, these headphones are absolutely impractical for any kind of use outdoors. The 6. jack with the 3.5 adaptor makes the connector pretty chunky and as I've found connecting to some phones in cases it may not plug in correctly. The cable is long as well, so you'd have alot of slack.
They leak alot of noise, so if anyone else is around they will hear what is blitzing through these things, and they are loud.
However put these things in your computer at home or any portable player as well and they absolutely stunning. My music (Alot of rock / metal with occasional electronic / drum and bass) has never sounded so clear, so crunchy and impactful.
Whack the volume up to the most that your ears can handle, these things don't care. You'll get no crackling or distortion and whatever you're playing will still have amazing clarity.
These are expensive headphones no doubt, but I've never wanted to listen to so much music in my home since getting them. Everything sounds new again!

I Don't umm and ahhh over buying these headphones, they sound absolutely sublime for movies, games and music. They are supremely comfortable and the sound stage is spectacular. These headphones are definitely worth the investment.
