Basically the sennheiser cx 870 is a very capable performer in terms of sound quality. At first, highs were lacking, mids were veiled, and bass was a bit lacking. After about 40 hours of burn-in, all those changed. They sounded really good and carries that dark laid back sennheiser type of sound. And to those who are planning to purchase the 880 version, the only difference is the volume control, which for me is just an extra burden of bulkiness. Compared to say mtpg, they are not too far behind. The mtpg has better bass but it is clearly not better at 4 times the price. I would recommend this for those who are looking for a budget iem that suits most if not all sorts of music

Just got these to replace my Sennheiser CX500s. The CX500s lasted me a a good couple of years and went all the way round the world with me, but finally went mono on me last week. Not bad for sub £20 headphones. However, got my CX870s this morning and I am just bowled over. The sound quality really is an order of mangnitude better, and they look and feel genuinely a lot more robust than my previous pair.

As with other Sennheisers, the volume is significantly louder than my previous Sony earbud style headphones, meaning I don't have to have the levels so high on my phone/mp3 player. Compared to the CX500s there is much more definition to the sound. The CX500s and The CX200s I had before both had very heavy bass, which I liked, but it was probably not the most accurate sound reproduction. The EQ on the CX870s seems to me to be much closer to what was originally intended, but it does have help to have the ability to adjust the EQ on the device you are playing on as for some of my albums it almost feels that the treble definition is a little bit too high.

Overall though, I am so massively pleased with these headphones that it inspired me to write my first Amazon review! Really worth the extra cash in my opinion.

I bought these to replace my Sennheiser CX 500 phones which sadly objected to my rough use over a couple of years! The 870s are a much superior product. The construction is much stronger & the quality of sound reproduction is superb. Lovely deep bass with a good range right across the spectrum. They DON'T have a securing clip but I transferred the one from my CX 500s. There is only one set of ear buds but I've found them both secure & comfortable whilst both running & walking.

These are my upgrade from the CX300's and the difference is instantly noticable.

Firstly the fit the ear canal doesn't have that high-pressure feel that lets you hear yourself breathe. Instead it fits well and feels comfortable. This was my one major gripe with my Sennheiser 300's and previous Sony's that came with the old Walkman phones.

Quality wise they're fantastic. Not quite on-par with my Beyerdynamic DT 770's but the sound feels a lot closer which is nice. Compared to my old 300's the range is much better and the bass is better too. One problem the 300's had was that everything sounded very dull but these bring the tracks back to life and you can hear much more.

The only thing worth considering is that they're 32ohms which means the volume won't be as high as some of the cheaper headphones and may drain the battery of your iPod et al quicker. However, because of the noise reduction you shouldn't need it as loud anyway.

I got these about a week ago, having previously used some Sennheiser CX300s and Sony Fontopia phones. Immediately, I was impressed by the naturalness and sense of space around the sound. Bass was well extended and not at all over bearing. I was also impressed by the build quality and comfort of these phones. The only thing which I didn't like was the somewhat aggressive and coloured quality to high treble and sibilant sounds. I figured this would probably be a case of these phones needing some time to bed in (or burn in).

I plugged them into my music player and left them on a moderately high volume for a few days, just playing away in the spare room. When I tried them again, the improvement was dramatic - the treble end had sweetened and smoothed out, and the whole balance to the sound had improved - it all felt as one, whilst still having the delightful detail and sense of spaciousness they had out of the box. I suspect they might continue to improve for a little while yet.

So to sum up - lovely sound, but you must, must let them run in for 40-50 hours to hear them working properly.

These headphones are absolutely amazing in terms of their sound quality. I treated myself to upgrade my CX300's - they went mono on me after an enduring 2 year stretch of hardcore London underground, international flights and multiple UK rail services. They lasted me well, and had no problems with them.

The reason I give this 3* is the things do not sit in my ears. I read all the reviews before buying but decided to go ahead as I remember my CX300 were the same. So I persevered for about 3 weeks and now I'm too fed up. With any muscle I move the thing just shifts out your ear. The more you move the more it pulls, rotates and eventually the beautiful sounds fade into the sounds of the London traffic and tubes. I figured it was adaptation time but it seems I was wrong. Perhaps I have weird ear shapes but going by other review I am not alone.

I'm going to give the CX400's a shot, which are identical to the CX300's.
