Product Description

Product Description

British jazz legend, Stan Tracey CBE revisits his vast library of compositions with his regular trio, Andy Cleyndert on bass and Clark Tracey on drums, plus the highly talented saxophonist Simon Allen.

Stan Tracey releases the next in his series of brand new recordings on his own label. Recorded in April 2008, 'Senior Moment' is a contemporary retrospective of part of his vast library of compositions and includes for the first time "The Grandad Suite" in its entirety. He is joined by his regular longstanding trio of Andrew Cleyndert on bass and Clark Tracey on drums with the addition of the highly talented saxophonist Simon Allen, who also works in Tracey's Sextet, Octet and Orchestra.

Personnel: Stan Tracey (piano), Simon Allen (saxophones), Andy Cleyndert (bass), Clark Tracey (drums)

Review

(4 stars) One of Tracey's best...Stan really is a national treasure...he's playing better than ever...Simon Allen is excellent. -- Jazzwise, (Tony Hall), December 2009/January 2010

(4 stars) Triple Celebration is like a Sonny Rollins calypso, Stemless a sassy bop blues...with Allen injecting an anthemic soul-jazzy heat. -- The Guardian, (John Fordham), October 9, 2009

Stan Tracey is still writing and playing with wit, passion and energy...an hour of appealing and inspired music...don't miss this one. -- Jazz Journal, (Mark Gardner), January 2010

Tracey's quirky, bouncing, harmonically rich piano work is complimented by the masterly young saxophonist Simon Allen...superb new suite.
-- Jazz UK, (Chris Yates), December 2009 / January 2010

5.0 out of 5 stars Senior moment - No senior moments here ! 31 Oct 2009
By J. D. Naylor TOP 1000 REVIEWER
The evergreen Stan Tracey has done it again. At 83 years young he's managed to provide the listener with another terrific album that stands alongside his best work.
He is accompanied by the steady rhythm section of his son Clark on drums and Andrew Cleyndert who are complemented perfectly by the lively Simon Allen on saxophones. All the compositions are Stan's own work and good one's they are too. "Afro Charlie..." and "Rocky Mount" could have been written by Thelonious Monk himself with their quirky offbeat melodies,"Triple celebration" is a joyous calypso with perhaps some of that Sonny Rollins influence rubbing off on Stan from their days in the sixties and finally, the last four tracks are the Grandad suite which i presume are influenced by the differing personalities of his own Grandchildren and are all different but very Tracey'ish.
Stan's playing really has not diminished at all despite advancing years. To be fair Stan has never relied on keyboard pyrotechnics but does still manage a steady flow of creative ideas delivered in his own,at times, jagged and spikey way.Allen is a revelation on saxophones and proves to be both nimble fingered and highly creative in his soloing. The rhythm boys are rock steady,Stan's comping is imaginitive as always and the sound quality excellent.
This man is a national treasure and is still on fantastic form.As it says on Stan's website, he is after all "The Godfather of British jazz".
Buy a piece of a legend today and enjoy.
Roll on Stan !
