5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Alternative, 16 Dec 2003
By A Customer
Sengoku is a role-playing game set in Japan during the Sengoku Jidai or (lit. conflict era) and is a refreshingly clear and unpretentious. It offers three levels of realism: Historical, “Chanabara” (cinematic) and Anime. As is it allows for extremely detailed games revolving around the Buke (the social class composed of samurai) and also includes enough materiel to play as ninja, warrior monks or virtually any member of feudal Japanese society (or counter-culture.)

The level of insight this book presents in to the society of the time is simply breathtaking, particularly in regard to day to day life, an area which, while vital to building any kind of atmosphere in a role-playing game is often ignored in more authoritative history books. The setting provides one of the richest realistic backdrops possible, including everything from brawling European sailors to Chinese mystics and marauding bandits. while allowing plenty of space for the addition of more fantastical elements. (Tengu, Oni, Foo-Lions etc, as well as ki powers and spells.)
The game itself is extremely playable with a selection of pre-built NPC’s ready to drop in with little or no alteration required to cover almost all foreseeable circumstances, and the text is full of inspiration for game ideas.

Also worth noting is that this game uses the Fuzion system, a generic game system for which many “Plug-in’s” are available, for free on-line (see TranzFuzion: http://www.mecha.com/~conkle/fuzion/ for links to add any-thing from super powers (highly appropriate if you want a more strongly Anime feel) to giant robotic power-suits (may require a little alteration to the back ground materiel presented here.) There is also a section at the back providing conversion notes to allow the use of AD&D and L5R (Legend of The Five Rings) characters/monsters in the game.

There are a few minor areas where the game is not as strong as it could be:
As they stand the fantasy elements are a very minor (and optional) part of the game, but compared to White Wolf’s Year of the Lotus and L5R they seem a little conservative and downplayed, on the other hand the game as presented in this rulebook doesn’t revolve around these things so it’s shouldn’t be a big problem.
The overall standard of the artwork is also a little low but this is ultimately a superficial complaint and shouldn’t detract from the enjoyment of the game, especially being counter-balanced by clear unpatronizing writing.
The Games real problem is that it doesn’t have as much expansion materiel as it deserves. Shinobi: Shadows of Nihon is superb but there are many aspects of the game that merit equal expansion (the Yamabushi being a prime example)

Overall this book is well worth checking out for the historical information alone even if you have no intention of playing the game itself.
