Product Description

Review

" This excellent new translation (with an introduction and notes) of On Anger, On Mercy, On the Private Life, and On Favours will be extremely helpful to those interested in Stoic ethics and also to those whose interest is in ancient political thought, the Roman use of Greek ideas, or the thought of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century European writers like Clavin, Montaigne, and Lipsius, whom Seneca influenced." Ethics

"Cooper and Procopé in this volume have presented students with a very useful and valuable aide for the study of Stoic political philosophy." International Studies in Philosophy

Product Description

This volume offers clear and forceful contemporary translations of the most important of Seneca's 'Moral Essays': On Anger, On Mercy, On the Private Life and the first four books of On Favours. They give an attractive, full picture of the social and moral outlook of an ancient Stoic thinker intimately involved in the governance of the Roman empire in the mid first century of the Christian era. A general introduction describes Seneca's life and career and explains the fundamental ideas underlying the Stoic moral, social and political philosophy that informs the essays. Individual introductions, footnotes and biographical notes place the essays in their historical and philosophical contexts, and further assistance to students is provided by section headings in the translations which organize the principal transitions in the argument and the more unfamiliar aspects of Seneca's writing.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca - c.4 BC - AD 65 Roman tutor, political advisor + Stoic philosopher

i have just bought this book recently as i wanted to delve deeper into this master Stoic philosopher's the goo dnews is that "Moral and Political Essay" is an excellent scholarly book edited + translated by Princeton professor of Philosophy + JF Procope. this 6th edition goes some way deeper into Seneca's life + writings. the book is approx 9 x 4", contains 324 pages in smallish but readable text covering 4 main topics :On Anger,On Mercy, On the Private Life + On Favours. with a general introduction ,Synopsis, as well as a very useful detailed Index , for fast location of Key themes etc.

I would recommend first time readers start with Penguins' excellent Great Little Ideas budget book of selected + edited works by Seneca : "Life is Long if You Know How to Live it" (see my amazon review also if yr curious) that gives a fine overview of Seneca's general philosophical modus operandi in a small but very approachable book. However, the Cambridge Press book reviewed here, should provide countless scholarly + pleasureable hours of reading into the minds + writings of one of the most common sense-ical philosophers.

strongly recommended for those seeking some life advise + wisdom along the way by one of the long acknowledged Roman philosophical sages, long before the present spate of so called life style "gurus"..

My friends and I saw the play "ART" in Los Angeles, with Alan Alda and two other very fine actors. The book Seneca was mentioned. The play was about a man buying a white on white painting and the relationship thereafter with his two friends.

Excellent Translation 22 Feb 2011
By Kevin F. Dolan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a nice-sized, well-cut, book with bright pages and clear text. However, the font on the cover isn't as fuzzy in real life as it is on the image at the top of the Amazon "purchase page"--not to mention the fact that the blue jacket is startlingly vivid in real life. Overall, a relatively stunning yet simple book that goes well with jeans or dress-pants.

It arrived in good condition. The real color of the cover is a bit darker though.
