Review

'This book is not only a model of an introductory textbook, but goes far beyond the limitations of that genre to give us a genuinely new and consistent view of the field. I would recommend it to anyone already researching in the field, as a way of refreshing their understanding of the potential of semiotic analysis, as well as a perfect guide for teaching students from undergraduate level up.'
- Edward McDonald, English editor at Chinese Central Television

'This is an excellent basic introduction to the subject, with a good glossary, an index, and a list of further reading.' - Mantex

5.0 out of 5 stars "Semiotics: The Basics" by Daniel Chandler 23 Aug 2002
Format:Paperback
Having never studied semiotics before, I was a little apprehensive at the prospect of it all. However, this all changed when I bought Daniel Chandler's immediately accessible book on the recommendation of a friend.

From the outset Chandler's style makes the ideas and theories surrounding semiotics clear and easy to understand. His often insightful points were interesting and engaging to read, while his methodical gathering together of the theories of other scholars were wide ranging and fairly appraised.

Out of all the books I bought for my first year at university studying a Drama, Film and Television degree this book was the most use to me. In my opinion "Semiotics: The Basics" is excellent value for money, and I would recommend it to other students without hesitation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dazzer C - The Sign Man! 2 Jun 2006
Format:Paperback
True this book may not be one that deals with Semiotics in a way that can be grasped by everyone, however it does fulfill the needs of those it's aimed at, usually degree level students. It is an excellent reference for many aspects of Semiotics, and highly recommended. You can bet that someone like Robert Langdon would read this, so should you!

Semiotics in my opinion can be a very complex subject as the study of signs can be very complex at the best of times but Daniel Chandler has provided a very welcome introduction to a sometimes very daunting subject. Reading this book has made me more comfortable about studying semiotics and although there is still more for me to learn, I am happy with the foundations that this book has provided me with. This book is practically jargon-free and has given me an added interest into the study of semiotics. Daniel Chandler is an expert in his field with a fantastic writing style that makes this book enjoyable rather than endurable.
I would certainly reccommend this book to anybody studying in this field.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive guide 26 July 2002
By F&F
Format:Paperback
This is the most approachable, yet thoroughly comprehensive book on the subject I have read, and although the title would infer a basic introduction to Semiotics, Chandler expands and reflects on the major players in this field in great detail (notably Barthes, Saussure, Peirce etc). Each topic is approached with freshness and enthusiasm, with a desire to get under the skin of the subject. Already a keen reader on this subject, Chandler has encouraged and nurtured my enthusiasm with this latest
offering..

The accessible nature of Chandler's writing style enables the reader to fully absorb themselves in a fascinating area of study, and one which is applicable to so many areas, not just purely academic fields. One of the most useful aspects of the book is its suggestions of further reading, with honest appraisals of their strenghs and weaknesses. I also consistly refer to the book's thorough glossary, which is my first
and only stop for those key explainations of difficult terms.

A must for any student, beginner or at an advanced level, the book never fails to hold interest and, most importantly, allow the reader to fully understand some difficult concepts. Chandler is a smooth and eloquent writer, and a master of his field. I would, and definitely will, recommend the book to anybody.

5.0 out of 5 stars Basics and more 23 Aug 2002
By Andy S
Format:Paperback
One of my first introductions to semiotics was Chandler's web site relating to the basics of semiotics. This book provides an excellent written form of the information there and extends upon it. Chandler provides a clear introduction to semiotics, the sources and history and compares many of the models which have grown in the field. The book is clearly presented and works at many levels; as an introduction to semiotics, as a source of more detailed information and references, and as a reference source itself for introducing and clarifying terms which appear as the reader delves further into the field. The book is now one of my first sources of reference and I recommend it to anyone interested in the field of semiotics.

1.0 out of 5 stars There is nothing basic about this BOOK. 26 Oct 2002
By Andrew
Format:Paperback
I understand fully that the field of Semiotics is a complex one (part of my PhD thesis is on the very subject), but unfortunatly Daniel Chandler's book which is supposed to deal with the most basic principles of the field, is quite baffling in places. Many of the examples are unclear, much of the language and terminology is repetative (further heightening confusion), and the author's approach to the subject assumes the reader is familiar with concepts of literary and linguistic theory that far surpass the pretence that Semiotics has been stripped to its most BASIC level within this text. I have never seen a more misleading title - so newcomers to the field of semiotics BEWARE - your search for answers wont be found within this book.
