Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

From Yesterday to Penny Lane is the follow-up to Göran Söllscher's first disc of Beatles guitar transcriptions--and it is every bit as enjoyable, and stylistically even more adventurous. Söllscher has the knack of knowing how far to take each song--teasing out the pathos in "Norwegian Wood" and "The Long and Winding Road", while respecting the simple yet sublime melodic writing of "In My Life" and "I Will". Per Arne Glorvigen joins him on bandoneon for three tango transformations, including a suitably ominous "Come Together", complete with guitar percussives. For many the fifth Beatle, George Martin's roots in the world of 1950s light music are vividly evoked in his Three American Sketches. "Westward, Look!" engages with its catchy rhythmic syncopation, while "New York, New York" has a breeziness recalling classic Dave Brubeck. Finally, there' a seven-song suite arranged by Cuban Leo Brouwer, guitar composer second to none. Highlights include a wistful and harmonically sumptuous "Here, There and Everywhere", and the elaborate fantasy conjured from "Eleanor Rigby". Crisply and atmospherically recorded, this is worth investigating. --Richard Whitehouse

Göran Söllscher - From Yesterday to Penny Lane

Following on from his critically acclaimed solo-guitar,'Here There And Everywhere' Goran Sollscher turns to more diverse arrangements of Beatles standards on this disc. He still solos on tracks such as an ethereally moving Norwegian Wood (arr. Noriyasu Takeuchiu)and his own pretty arrangement of McCartney's Long And Winding Road, yet introduces a Latin American Bandoneon (a kind of Argentinian accordion, much heard in Tango) into Come Together,I Want To Hold Your Hand and a wonderful, smile inducing Help! These masterly arrangements are, for me, the crux of the album evoking smoky Parisian nightclubs perhaps not so far removed from the Beatles at the The Cavern and Hamburg taverns.
He teams with veteran Lennon/McCartney arranger Leo Brouwer for a magical guitar and strings medley; very Mantovani meets Stravinsky as you begin to believe that surely the next track cannot be quite as marvellous as the last. You would be wrong. I look forward to Mr. Sollscher's next compilation, as he says himself, 'There are still a lot of songs left...'

I loved this CD. I still play my old Beatles tracks, but it was lovely to hear familier music played so differently and beautifully. Highly recommended

Great stuff 6 Jan 2002

Couple of things need correcting here. First, the player's name is Goran not Gordan, and none of the tracks are 'Japanese'. 'Nuf said.

I bought this album over a year ago through DG in Germany. I love it. Sollscher is my all time favorite guitarist, both in his classical work and his popular work. Virtuosity never intrudes on the music. If you like classical guitar, check out his Bach transcription album, and his 2 CD Bach lute suites. His earlied Beatles album was the best of breed for Beatles on classical guitar; this one just adds more icing to the cake. It includes 8 Beatles arangements, Brower's "Seven Songs after the Beatles", and the non-Beatles work "Three American Sketches" by Gearge Martin.

Several of the works on this album have accompanyment on bandoneon by Per Arne Glorvigen. These are in a 'South American style' according to the liner notes, and they are work surprisingly well. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" is wonderful! Had to go back and check the original to verifdy that it was in fact written in a minor key. It was.

The only problem with is album is the sticker shock; wish DG would officially release it in the US.

Goran Sollscher has arranged these Beatles songs expertly for the guitar. He maintains all the subtly of the originals as well as exploiting all the tonal range of the classical guitar.
