Product Description

From the Back Cover

The garden was large and slightly wild. The deep lush grass was scattered with little white starry daisies, and bluebells and buttercups bloomed in all the corners...

And the owner of this beautiful garden is a very selfish giant, who decides not to let the children play in it any more--until one day, when his heart is melted by a very special little boy...

This classic story, perhaps one of the most moving tales from the pen of Oscar Wilde, is beautifully retold here by Fiona Waters, and illustrated with great drama by Fabian Negrin.

It may seem wrong that the original story has been changed, but the original story is the original story, and this abridged version has a different job to do, and it does it well for our current culture. The spirit of the original is still in there.

Alexis Deacon's work is atmospheric and intriguing, sensitive, beautiful and a bit weird - definitely dream-like and so perfect for this story. The quality of the book itself is great, it's a really nice thing to have; and the contents are so interesting. A timeless, mysterious quality and the expressions of characters in situations supports the compassionate feel of the story.

I bought this book for myself, but if i had children i would definitely share this with them (oh dear! i honestly didn't mean to make a faint pun about selfishness..). It's a memorable thing of beauty, sincerity and quality throughout, even if it's missing bits, and it isn't really.

This tape has quickly become a favourite with my nieces and nephews. The music is enchanting and the kids love dancing to the rag-time storm scene. The lush cover illustration also makes it an appealing gift. I truly hope this group of artists will continue producing more stories of this calibre. What a wonderful way to teach children to appreciate the classics!

Why does Fiona Waters think it a good idea to rewrite Oscar Wilde? Would you buy a book that rewrote Shakespeare? I bought this book for my daughter because I love the story and thought the illustrations looked interesting. I did not realise it was a rewriting - The rewriting actually seems to make the text longer, it diminishes Wilde's humour and wit, his turn of phrase, as if patronising children by saying they wouldn't get it! I was deeply disappointed in this book and although the illustrations are interesting, they do not illustrate the text as well as I would expect, but then the text to be illustrated is not as good as the original. There are no illustrations of winter and frost and wind rattling round the house. Don't buy this book

OK, this title is Illustrated and Abridged by Alexis Deacon however I always thought of Oscar Wilde as an exclusive adult author, so much so that this book pretty much knocked my socks off with the beautiful way in which the story is told, helps bring the message about sharing and joining in as well as how having fun with others can really brighten your world.

Its wonderfully descriptive and when you throw in artwork that is beautiful to behold as well as something that will have you carefully looking at all the details all round makes this a book that is definitely worth having. Magic.

Just like I remembered, as a child I saw an animation depicting this story. Always wanted to read the original - did not disappoint.

This book is a gentle education for children in terms of understanding death, religion and how to treat others. I had to read it for a University short story module in my English degree and there is a lot more to it than you think! Reading it in context with Wilde's life paints a powerful picture of a great writer of enormous talent who wasn't what people thought he was. A sad story but beautifully written.

Bought a paper copy, notice the good previous reviews are for kindle. It's just a photocopy in a cover A4 size, not looking at all like the 'look inside' images, which are kindle I suppose. A beautiful story that all should read but don't waste your money on the paper version advertised here.
