When I read this author's Xenofreak Nation, I was struck by her ability to construct a parallel reality which feels as authentic as the one we live in. Then, it was a glimpse into a totally plausible future. And, with SelfSame, she's done it again, except that she now has me accepting the notion of time travel and the concept of a divided soul. Her technique is to alternate chapters to give us the pendulum sweep between the 18th and 21st centuries while keeping a tight narrative unity around the central character.

It's beautifully, carefully written, the arc is well-sustained and the pacing immaculate. It's intended for the YA market but its exploration of the links between past and present and the intimation of a spiritual world which binds them and makes them part of a single moment will attract all readers who appreciate good writing.

In short, it's an excellent, entertaining read.

Couldn't believe it... 14 Dec 2012

I am not, I repeat NOT, a fan of time travel-type stories. But when I saw that this book had ZERO bad reviews, I made myself try it, especially with such an unreasonable price of 99 cents. I say unreasonable because this author deserves so much more money for this incredible book. The characters are believable, relatable, and well-rounded. And I can't say I'm an expert on how things were done in the past, but it sounded spot-on to me.

Melissa Conway didn't shirk any corners, she didn't avoid explaining things that other authors would have, and she didn't let up on the action. The plot was solid; it never lagged, and whenever I put it down I picked it up five minutes later, dying to know what was next.

Thanks, Melissa, I finished this by six in the morning and I had to work at ten!
But seriously, pick up this book, readers. You will not be disappointed.

Awesome!!! I mean awesome! 4 Nov 2012

WOW! I read so often that after a while you start to feel like books are running together and that you have read the same story who knows how many times, but I didn't feel that way about the book at all. I mean the fact that the main character has a soul that is divided is not exactly something you come accross everyday! I loved it because it was so different and the writing is just fantastic. You feel everything Sorcha and Enid feel and you cant help but feel sad for her in both her lives and yet hopeful everything will be ok. I don't want to give it away because this book is best without too much specifics I think. Just know this book is about a girl named Enid who was born in the 1700s with a soul that is split into 2 bodies. One in the 1700s and one in the current time period. She goes to sleep as Enid and wakes up as Sorcha in the current time period. My only critique would be I wish the relationships were developed a little more, but it didn't take away from how amazing it was to read. I'm definietly going to recommend this book to my friends!

I bought SelfSame on a whim. At 99 cents, I figured it was worth the gamble. And boy, am I glad I did! It has a unique plot, with many surprises. It's not a long read, nor is it challenging, but you'll be hooked within the first few pages!!
