Before continuing, please read all the negative reviews for this book, then come back here.

Okay. Here's the thing about mentalism - and something that most reviewers seem to have missed. Mentalism is all in the performmance. if you're a convincing performer, your mentalism will be convincing. I've seen reviewers complain that this book is not for professionals or advanced magicians. I disagree. Fulves provides a fabulous selection of simple methods, and presents them simply and basically.

The complete novice will have fun presenting these effects as cute tricks down the pub. They might score some pints, but they won't hit the big time.

The semi-serious enthusiast (and by that I mean the ones that still look for the trick rather than the magic) will be left cold by pretty much everything here and if they do try anything it will fall flat on its face.

The experienced performer will find gem after gem in these pages. They'll spin it into a context of their own, introduce drama and imagination, and completely SLAY with it.

Never underestimate simplicity. it's presentation and persona that makes a mentalist!

The comments about this book by other reviewers are not entirely deserved in my opinion... Most professional works (generally available only from magical dealers) cost many times the cost of this volume - and contain only a fraction of the effects. Besides, the important thing in a book on magic is the IDEA for an effect - which the performer then colours with his or her own personal style and themed setting. For me, the price of this book was redeemed by one effect alone (a visible mind-over-matter effect with a watch) worth TEN TIMES the cost of this whole book. No magic book is perfect - and this work is no exception. But look at the price you are paying for numerous top-class effects! One excellent effect alone at that price is worth the price of the book. Some people just moan about everything - what was the saying about looking a gift horse in the mouth???

Not great 20 Mar 2002

Format:Paperback
There is nothing that really stands out about this book, there are some good tricks, but there are alot of dire ones. An example of one of the more imaginative tricks is, you claim you can read peoples minds, when in actual fact you leave the room and peep through the key hole to see what happens when you are not there.

Written and published in the seventies, so more local cabaret club (or Paul Daniels) rather than David Blane (or Derren Brown)

Self working mental magic
The way this work was described i thought i was buying a debunking of mind reading tricks commonly used by mediums etc. It was in fact a magic book, teaching several tricks. Read more

Not bad but not really mentalism
This is really a general magic book rather than one specialising in mentalism. As such it has some good material and, for the price, is reasonable.

fantastic
every trick in this book is awesome and is accomplished by reading it once trying it and succeeding at it!

Not "Self-working" nor "Mental"
If you are looking for Darren Brown type of tricks, move along. These are just simple magic tricks (some are still pretty fun though), not what I was expecting. Read more

Excellent guide to fundamental tricks
I think a few reviews have been a bit harsh - this book isn't going to turn you into Derren Brown overnight. Read more

Only OK but worth a look for amateurs

Not all that great, really....
I can see that this book has it's fans, but I am ot one of them. The tricks are verging on child like, and the whole way the book is laid out is very ninteen sixties. Read more
