2.0 out of 5 stars Mistitled. 7 April 2012
By Brunt
Format:Paperback
The only thing that separates this title from the many others on the subject are the words "Self-sufficiency" but unfortunately this element does not appear in the book itself. It describes very much standard practice home brewing techniques and assumes the reader will want to buy everything needed from a homebrew supplier.

It's not a bad book, but I think people interested in home brewing could get more from another title and those interested in self sufficiency style brewing will not be expanding upon the couple of pages on the subject which appear in most self sufficiency books (e.g. John Seymour's).

It should also be mentioned that this book refers only to beer, and not any kind of country wine or mead.

I recommend Wild Fermentation by Sandor Ellix Katz for a more do it your self approach.

5.0 out of 5 stars Idiots guide. Exactly what I wanted. 31 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm new to home brewing, and needed a book to explain it all to me in simple terms, without resorting to jargon or assuming prior knowledge. This book does exactly that, guiding you through the history and the science of beer-making up to actual recipes and brew tips in the later chapters.

It starts off slowly without being boring, and introduces new words and concepts bit-by-bit so that at the end of it you know what all the different things are, and could hold your own in a conversation with proper beardy ale drinkers.

Totally recommended for beer or brewing enthusiasts, and the eralier chapters would be a good casual read for anyone interested in the history of beer.
